Managing feed as a fomite and achieving animal performance and productivity goals require that producers reduce microbial loads and the prevalence of pathogens in feed and feed ingredients. Chemical treatments in the form of feed additives offer varying levels of effectiveness and control, enabling producers to tailor feed pathogen control to their specific operational risks.

One of the main challenges in antibiotic-free production is the prevention of bacterial infections in the gut. Managing the gut microbiome is a critical challenge in ABF production. The role of the poultry microbiome can contribute or interfere with the digestion of nutrients, protect or harm physical gut integrity, support intestinal immunity and prevent the colonization of pathogens. Feed quality plays a critical role in the health and performance of commercial poultry, especially through its direct impact on the microbiome, which is particularly sensitive to changes in feed composition and microbial quality. Poor quality feed can lead to dysbiosis, resulting in reduced nutrient absorption, increased pathogen prevalence and decreased overall health and productivity. What are the options for managing the gut microbiome in ABF production? Follow along with Dr. Enrique Montiel below. https://hubs.ly/Q02JgKqN0

Feed biosecurity has never been more accessible. The world's leading food producers know that comprehensive biosecurity programs are not a 'nice to have' for feed mill managers — it's a must. Compliance, efficiency, cost saving and reputation *all* depend on a high-functioning biosecurity plan. The Feed Mill Biosecurity Audit app allows users to: ✔️ Pinpoint problem areas ✔️ Identify good manufacturing practices ✔️ Comply with regulatory biosecurity measures ✔️ Establish baseline biosecurity standards Download it for free in Apple iOs & Google Play stores using the link below. https://hubs.ly/Q02HNDWW0

Research shows that sows exposed to PEDv after 90 days of pregnancy or during lactation had 4–9 fewer pigs weaned and a 36%–77% greater pre-weaning mortality. Feed is a fomite for swine viruses, and studies have shown that specific ingredient matrices can enhance virus survival. Preventing virus transmission through contaminated feed is achievable with proper protocols in place. In conjunction with PIPESTONE, a trial was done to evaluate the effect of clean feed on preventing and controlling PEDv, PRRSV and SVA. Get the full study below. https://hubs.ly/Q02HCmhC0

Yesterday during the Poultry Science Association Annual Meeting, we discussed the benefits of high-quality pellets including: ✓ reduced waste ✓ less segregation in feed ✓ improved feed conversion ✓ improved overall bird health Good pellet quality is a bit like Goldilocks and the three bears—not be too soft, not too hard, but just right. Pellets too soft will result in crumbling and feed fines. Alternatively, pellets too hard will break and create fines.   In a recent study, an improvement of 20% pellets in the feeder led to a 3-point increase in FCR leading to a healthier, more productive flock. Additionally, a study conducted by Courtney Poholsky evidenced that improving pellet quality can reduce amino acid and phytase activity variability throughout broiler houses. Maintain high-quality pellets without compromising throughput goals. Access the guide below. https://hubs.ly/Q02H7Dfy0

Feed mills play a crucial role in agriculture and animal husbandry by producing high-quality animal feed to meet the nutritional requirements of livestock. It's never been just about making enough, though. Feed mills turn raw materials into animal welfare. They turn processes into profitability. They turn feed quality into food safety. They turn efficiency into innovation. They turn one-light towns into global growth. Animal agriculture continues to evolve and address emerging challenges. We're proud to partner with the world's feed producers to ensure a safer, more sustainable food chain.

Pellets with high durability exhibit greater resistance to mechanical stress and environmental factors, ensuring consistent performance and nutrient delivery to animals. Optimizing performance is essential for the long-term success of poultry and swine operations. For example, Glover et al. (2015) observed a 3-point decrease in feed conversion when increasing pellet content in the feed pan from 50% to 70%. Through sustainable pellet production practices and a focus on energy efficiency, producers can: ✓ enhance feed quality ✓ improve animal performance ✓ and support feed producer efficiency and profitability Attending the Poultry Science Association Annual Meeting this week? Join Jose Ramirez as he discusses the impact of feed form on bird performance tomorrow. Use the link below to save your spot. *registration to the event is required https://hubs.ly/Q02GCVQ50

PH plays a significant role in fermentation, influencing enzyme activity and microbial growth. OptimOH reduces the use of corrosive chemicals within the fermentation process by facilitating necessary pH changes and preventing biofilm formation. Effectively reducing bacteria preserves essential sugars for complete fermentation and lowers levels of organic acids, which, if unchecked, could stress yeast and hinder fermentation. Ethanol producers use OptimOH to: ▪️ aid in necessary pH reductions ▪️ eliminate bacteria, supporting healthy fermentation ▪️ facilitate the re-use of process water, mash and yeast innoculum
