I remember seeing this post 2 years ago. With only 2 months left to graduate from my Master's, I knew I wouldn't meet one of their key eligibility criteria (i.e. being a student for the entire board term). That said, I also knew that as someone actively in the weeds building her career in tech and community development, I had valuable insights, relevant experiences, and skills that could benefit the board. I nominated myself. Ultimately, I was offered a board position to represent a mid-career perspective, creating a new opportunity for myself. I share this not to brag but to inspire anyone considering this role and thinking, "I don't know." I've had an incredible two years (and counting) serving on this board alongside brilliant minds in academia and industry. The conversations and choices are complex, tough, and ever-changing (the kind that keeps your mind running nonstop); the work feels incredibly personal, and the learnings are vast. However, the team, the cause, the community, and the current landscape challenges make it worthwhile.
