Time for a TUESDAY TIP from Anderson Center Consulting and Training! Summer may mean relaxation and restoration for many students, but for autistic and neurodivergent individuals, the lack of a school routine can be very difficult. If you are spending time with a young person who thrives on structure, be mindful of the many ways you can create that - even when school is out of session! Develop a set schedule for weekdays, and an itinerary for weekends, and hang it on the fridge. Photos depicting activities may also be used to help increase understanding and independence for some individuals. (for example, "pool time" with a graphic of a swimmer; "reading time" with an image of a book beside it.) We all deserve to enjoy this special time of year; make it as joyful as possible for autistic and neurodivergent children by giving them what they most need to experience it fully! "Anderson Center for Autism in Dutchess Gets $3M From State" The Anderson Center for Autism will get a $3 million boost in funding to help move forward its plan to rebuild a historic carriage house on the property that will help the center address its workforce shortage. “As a mom, it is heartbreaking to think about a child alone, struggling and unable to get the care and support they need,” Hochul stated in a release announcing the funding. “This funding will help the Anderson Center for Autism to continue to provide education, support and outreach services, as well as help children with autism build the skills they need to connect with the world and live healthy, independent, productive lives.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eZfUWsf4

We brought in experts from Anderson Center Consulting and Training - who work with this community day in and day out - and they knew exactly what design elements to bring in to make our Sensory Room a special, comforting, calming environment that could surprise and delight. Their input was tremendously valuable; they helped reinforce decisions we were making, helped us figure out how to make the room accessible, and even helped us find the best ways to clearly communicate that it wasn’t for every traveler who has children, but was reserved specifically for those who are autistic or neurodivergent.
