Amsted Graphite Materials is a world leader in graphite material science with over 100 years of experience in the carbon and graphite industry. Operations began in 1906 in Clarksburg, West Virginia and our history can be traced back to National Carbon Company, Union Carbide Corporation, UCAR Carbon Company, GrafTech International and most recently Advanced Graphite Materials LLC in 2017. On May 31, 2020, the business joined the Amsted Industries family of companies and is known as Amsted Graphite Materials. Technical Leader in Advanced Nuclear Technology at Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)
Did you know that Graphite is one of the most important materials for advanced nuclear reactors? It slows neutrons so they can cause fission, bounces them back into the core to maximize their use, and even contains the fuel itself for some. I got to tour the Amsted Graphite Materials facility last week with Chris Wax from EPRI and Chuck Marks and Nathaniel Craft from Dominion Engineering, Inc. We learned a lot, and have so many ideas to mull over on how we can all improve industries' access to this critical material. Pictured below is an enormous piece of graphite, with me for scale.
