Acting VISTA Director Maggie Garvey reflects on her recent travel to Tennessee:    Throughout my life, AmeriCorps and national service have played a significant role. I am a proud VISTA alum and even met my wife during my service term. But in my years of service, one thing has remained constant: I am continuously inspired when visiting our changemakers in the field!    My first stop was Cleveland, Tenn., where I met with our members serving with United Way of the Ocoee Region. The program is celebrating 10 years of making a difference at over 65 sites. We met with our members, heard their stories, toured their facilities, and saw how the project is strengthening the local community.   At a round table, I listened as members shared stories of starting new initiatives, identifying new ways to gain efficiencies through partnerships, and ideating a better quality of life for their community in real time. Later I heard from community leaders who counted for me the number of leaders in their community who were recruited and developed through VISTA service. It was astounding! Not only were these members invested today, but they were also living out our greatest hope – that national service is the catalyst for a lifetime of service.    Next, I joined 100+ AmeriCorps members, alums, grantees/sponsors, partners, and agency staff at Knoxville-Knox County Community Action Committee and Volunteer Tennessee's 30th anniversary celebration of AmeriCorps. The individuals of The Volunteer State have an impressive history of stepping forward when their community calls. With 4,500+ members and volunteers at over 600 sites, national service is changing lives, and is something to celebrate every day! Folks gathered to mingle, reconnect, share stories of community impact, and celebrate a proud 30-year history of service with games, compelling testimonials, and of course a photo booth.    I left Tennessee fueled by the goodness of our work and the passion of our network. Thank you to everyone across the state who welcomed me and showed me how service makes a difference in your community.

As we reach another milestone of the AmeriCorps’ 30th anniversary, Acting VISTA Director Margaret Garvey shares her thoughts on our work as a pathway to employment:    For 30 years, AmeriCorps members have built training pipelines, expanded apprenticeship programs, and developed innovative solutions to expand financial opportunities in low-income communities. AmeriCorps has not only been supporting individuals as they battle the effects of poverty – but we have also been challenging and revisioning the systems and policies that perpetuate poverty in America.   Our commitment to promoting equity and economic opportunity predates the creation of the agency. Nearly 60 years ago President Lyndon B. Johnson laid the foundation of the agency with our legacy anti-poverty programs (VISTA, Foster Grandparents, and Senior Companion program) and began a coalition of service that has transformed immeasurable lives and communities. Our members and volunteers fiercely take on the challenges of our communities and serve with compassion and dedication as they help Americans reach for a better future. In return, their service leads them to new career paths and passions, affords higher education or pays student loans, and connects them to a network of 1.3 million alumni.    Each day I am inspired by the efforts of our network to effect change. On a recent site visit Sparrow, a member serving in the VISTA program in Tennessee, told me that her AmeriCorps service offers the “promise of opportunity.” Sparrow hopes to use her education award to finish her undergraduate degree. Another member shared, “my grandfather told me that I should only do a job to earn or to learn. Through AmeriCorps, I have been able to do both.”    I thank you all for your hard work and for joining us on this 30+ year journey. The actions you take through service forever change the lives of individuals and their families in communities across the nation, just as I know service transforms the lives of AmeriCorps members, AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers, and staff alike.   #AmeriCorpsVISTA #VISTA #Service #AmeriCorps30 #Employment #Career
