  • The American Academy of Nursing (Academy) strongly condemns the shooting that occurred at former President Donald Trump's rally this weekend, tragically resulting in injury and loss of life.   Nurses often respond to dangerous conditions to provide care for communities. The Academy applauds the emergency personnel and health care providers who responded promptly to this crisis.    For over a decade, the Academy has been on record supporting policies to reduce firearm violence. Firearm violence is an alarming epidemic in the United States and a public health approach to addressing the causes and risk factors is necessary to safeguard the health of the nation. The Academy supports the U.S. Surgeon General's recent declaration of gun violence as a public health crisis and stands ready to work with policymakers to enact policy changes to prevent future tragedies from occurring.   See the full list of the Academy’s recommendations for Firearm Safety and Violence Prevention: https://lnkd.in/e_RiH_-8

  • The Academy is concerned that today’s dismissal of Moyle v. United States and Idaho v. United States by the United States Supreme Court will cause confusion for both clinicians and patients related to abortion care in medical emergencies. Unfortunately, the dismissal allows litigation to continue related to whether abortion care provided under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) is permitted in the face of conflicting state laws with strict abortion prohibitions. "The Academy resolves to continue to support strong protections for the full spectrum of sexual and reproductive health services as well as protect the patient-provider relationship in the wake of this decision." - Linda Scott, Academy President Read the Academy's statement: https://lnkd.in/eeP4wt6M

  • During #Pride, the American Academy of Nursing reflects on our work to advance health equity for LGBTQ+ communities. Since last year, the Academy has signed on to 16 amicus briefs opposing restrictions to gender-affirming care. In addition to these policy actions, the American Academy of Nursing has publicly released our Policy Dialogue, “Nursing’s Responsibility to Our Patients and Our Profession: Countering the Attacks on Transgender and Gender-Diverse Health,” which is available to view here: https://lnkd.in/eVMSSEai

    • Photo of two figures holding a pride flag over a rainbow background. Text reads: "Supporting LGBTQ+ Health Equity - Academy Actions since June 2023 include 16 amicus brief sign-ons, 10 state cases, and hosting 2 dialogues and events."

  • The American Academy of Nursing issued a new position statement reinforcing its support for evidence-based policies that ensure all pregnant people have access to critical resources, high-quality health care, and social supports throughout the perinatal period. High rates of maternal mortality and morbidity as well as poor perinatal health outcomes and inequities are crises for women in the United States and the American Academy of Nursing has long championed policies to address these critical public health issues. While recent state and federal legislative efforts have attempted to address the maternal mortality and morbidity health crises, health inequities exacerbated by systemic and structural racism, bias, and a shortage of perinatal care providers are still evident. Increasing access to services supporting mothers and families throughout the perinatal period and promoting the growth and diversity of the perinatal workforce are essential to addressing these crises. • This #Juneteenth the Academy reflects on its continued efforts to champion equity, diversity, and inclusivity and recognizes that more needs to be done. On Monday, we hosted a webinar focused on "Alarming Trends to Limit Health Equity" which explored actions and strategies for nurses to effectively lead and make positive change within our systems and communities. The Academy remains committed to working towards a better future and its mission to improve health and achieve health equity by impacting policy through nursing leadership, innovation, and science.

The Supreme Court preserved access to Mifepristone and upheld the FDA Drug approval process. "The American Academy of Nursing (Academy) is on record urging strong protections for the full spectrum of sexual and reproductive health care under evidence-based clinical guidelines, including medicated abortion services. We stand in support of the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision today to dismiss the case U.S. Food and Drug Administration v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine due to lack of legal standing. By rejecting this challenge to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) evidence-based drug approval process, the Supreme Court has preserved access to mifepristone, a drug used in medicated abortion services. The Court’s dismissal in this case has avoided a dangerous precedent and has preserved access to a medication essential to the full spectrum of sexual and reproductive health care services, in addition to keeping the FDA’s scientific, independent medication approval and regulation processes in place. The Academy applauds the Supreme Court’s decision and reaffirms our call for strong protections for the full spectrum of sexual and reproductive health services and care." - American Academy of Nursing President Linda Scott Read the Academy's position: https://lnkd.in/eeP4wt6M
