America's Cutting Edge (ACE)

This week marked the inaugural launch of the University of St. Thomas School of Engineering's America's Cutting Edge (ACE) CNC Machining Bootcamp for high school students! A big "Thank You!" to Totino-Grace High School for providing us with great students ready to roll up their sleeves and learn. And congratulations to student Grant Lamonthent for his first place win in our CNC machining bootcamp assembly contest! When we say thousands of lives have been transformed by America's Cutting Edge training, we mean it. We're elated to share that 10,000 people have officially registered for an ACE online course! 🎉 It's easy to look at that number and get excited - and certainly, we are! But perhaps more exciting is considering every single person who has gone through ACE training and how their lives shape the world around them. That's why as we celebrate this milestone, we're focusing on each of you who has taken the course - and how your story is the most important aspect of it all.

IACMI and our partners are pleased to be part of the conference as speakers--Chad Duty, Craig A. Blue, Merlin Theodore, Michael Gomez, Mike Molnar, and of course, Tony Schmitz. It's been a privilege to represent #WorkforceDevelopment programs America's Cutting Edge (ACE) and #METAL at both the conference and Industry Night hosted at University of Tennessee, Knoxville's TN MADE facility. Plus we got to see people assemble the ACE air engine and show off the latest crown jewel of the ACE program, St. Cloud State University's mobile training unit! Exciting times!

Let’s talk about the number of teeth on an endmill. The top left panel shows the frequency response function, or FRF, for an endmill. This describes its natural frequency, stiffness, and damping. We obtain it from a tap test, where we excite the tool with an instrumented hammer and measure the response with an accelerometer. The other three panels show the stability maps for 25% radial immersion down milling in aluminum using an endmill with the displayed FRF (800 Hz natural frequency). The only difference is the number of teeth. We see that the best spindle speed-axial depth combination (green circle) changes with the number of teeth. As we add teeth, the stability peaks tend to squeeze together at lower spindle speeds. The simple equation shows the approximate relationship between the best spindle speed, natural frequency, and number of teeth. To learn more, register for our ACE CNC machining course.
