Sports For All, Forever
About us
The AAU was founded in 1888 to establish standards and uniformity in amateur sports. During its early years, the AAU served as a leader in international sport, representing the U.S. in the international sports federations. The AAU worked closely with the Olympic movement to prepare athletes for the Olympic games. After the Amateur Sports Act of 1978, the AAU has focused its efforts into providing sports programs for all participants of all ages beginning at the grass roots level. The philosophy of "Sports for All, Forever," is now shared by more than 720,000 members and 150,000 volunteers across 45 sports programs and 55 U.S. districts.

The initials “LB” could be seen on every jersey of the girls seventh grade Reach Elite basketball team at the 2024 AAU Memorial Day Classic. The special patch was a way to honor Lisa Brown, one of the team's biggest supporters, who passed away following a battle with breast cancer in August of last year. Lisa's husband and daughters spoke to us about their mom and how the basketball community has been a key support system for them: https://lnkd.in/eyTNtRpA #AAU #AAUbasketball #Family

Check out this #FlashbackFriday! We love taking a look back at AAU's history. In the summer of 1989, more than 5,000 young athletes competed in San Antonio for the 23rd AAU Junior Olympic Games. One of those athletes happened to be a future NBA Hall of Famer -- Shaquille O'Neal. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eX5ME_Y3 #AAUJuniorOlympicGames #AAU
In 1989, the San Antonio Sports Foundation finally got one. Despite the painful loss of the bid for the 1991 U.S. Olympic Festival, San Antonio’s electrifying bid made the sporting world realize the city could host a similar event, the AAU Junior Olympics. On August 5, fireworks rose over Alamo Stadium, and 5,000 young athletes participated in the traditional March of the Athletes. Over the next week, the city hosted the stars of tomorrow in 14 different sports. When it was over, there was no doubting San Antonio had the determination and the capability to host a major sporting event. With a little help from an in-construction domed stadium, the 1993 U.S. Olympic Festival was looking like a reality. https://bit.ly/3V4MRJe #DaretoDream #PowerofSport
