“What ‘seeds’ are you planting today? What will be the legacy of your team in 80 years?”

“Why are my dreams for you bigger than your dreams for you?” This question — or, rather, challenge — was one we heard often from our founder, Dr. Pearse Lyons. He taught us that setting “big audacious goals” is vital for success in life, in business, and in sports, as cyclist Tadej Pogačar has demonstrated this season. At the Tour de France this week, we witnessed history in the making as the 25-year-old Slovenian rider won his third Tour de France. He dominated the final stage of the historic race, continuing to push even when the yellow jersey was all but guaranteed. While Eddy Merckx’s 1972 season has long been considered the pinnacle of cycling, Pogačar is proving to be a unique talent that is elevating the sport. Pogačar, who races for UAE Team Emirates, won the Tour de France in his debut appearance in 2020 and again in 2021. He placed second in 2022 and 2023, just behind another generational talent, Jonas Vingegaard, who made a remarkable comeback for this year’s race after a serious accident 12 weeks ago. Their rivalry is considered one of the greatest duels in cycling history.  I remember watching the Tour many times when I was staying in France; it was on every screen in every cafe or restaurant. Over the past few years, the battle between two riders has lifted the Tour back to levels that were only seen in decades past, and the Netflix series “Unchained” has brought the race even more excitement and fans. This year was a mega-showdown, with the winners of the past four Tours going head-to-head for the tie breaker.  Ultimately, Pogačar was victorious. His accomplishments are quite impressive: • He won six stages and the General Classification at both the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France in a single season. • He achieved the most stage wins (17) at the Tour before the age of 26.  • He was the youngest rider to win three Tours. So, what is driving this young cyclist to the top of the pack? He has a big audacious goal. Earlier this year, he was asked if he thought about his place in sports history. His response: “Yeah. Now I have arrived at this point where I really strive to be the best ever.” (https://lnkd.in/gEa5zMHJ) Like Pogačar, Dr. Lyons was a limitless thinker, and he wanted us to share that same spirit. His generosity was measured far beyond monetary value, through his time, energy and ideas, so there would not be just one Dr. Lyons, but thousands of Dr. Lyonses “making a dent in the universe.” As we look ahead to celebrating his 80th birthday during our annual Make a Difference Day, we reflect on his tremendous legacy, which continues to be a part of our daily conversations. Dr. Lyons was devoted to “planting trees he would never see grow” — that is, he took action in the present to build a brighter future, even knowing he might never see the idea come to fruition. What “seeds” are you planting today? What will be the legacy of your team in 80 years?

It was wonderful to welcome many technical and academic leaders from the poultry world to Kentucky this week as the Poultry Science Association meetings took place in Louisville, just a short drive from Alltech’s global headquarters in Nicholasville. On Tuesday night, more than 120 attendees took over the skybox room of the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory for what was a homerun of a welcome reception. (The miniature Louisville Slugger bats our team handed out were also a big hit!) Thank you to everyone who attended — and well done to our Alltech colleagues who brought together poultry leaders from numerous countries, businesses and universities for an excellent evening of conversations and learning. I was thrilled to be the warm-up act for my friend, longtime mentor and colleague Dr. Ronan Power, Alltech’s chief scientific officer, who spoke about a critical issue for our industry: antibiotic resistance. Dr. Power discussed the potential to reverse antibiotic resistance by using science to make bacteria more sensitive to important veterinary interventions, which help us provide better care of our animals. The work he presented has been conducted between two of our bioscience centers — one located at our headquarters in Nicholasville, Kentucky, and the other at our European headquarters in Alltech’s home country of Ireland in Dunboyne, Co. Meath, just outside of Dublin. I began the conversation by sharing Alltech’s history through and into our fifth decade as a business, including the creation of our purpose of Working Together for a #PlanetofPlenty, a call for collaboration across geographies and industries to create a world of abundance for future generations. Our presentation culminated with the showing of a trailer for World Without Cows, our upcoming documentary that explores the vital role of cattle and what would happen if they were suddenly removed from our world. Despite being a poultry-focused event, there was full appreciation of the importance of telling this story. Though cows are the central story in our film, poultry is on the main stage for feeding the majority of the world because of the efficiency of its production, universal adoption and lower costs. As a truly global protein, there may be challenges ahead but there is no sector that will play as big a role in our achievement of planetary and development goals as the poultry industry, and the brains in the room Tuesday night will undoubtably help us to unlock that potential. Thank you for being with us.

We're excited to announce that Alltech has signed a collaborative agreement with Tobermore Concrete, CEMCOR Ltd, and RSC Group as partners in the Mid-Ulster Biorefinery and Circular Economy Cluster. This initiative, facilitated by the Centre for Competitiveness and supported by the Centre for Advanced Sustainable Energy (CASE) at Queen's University Belfast, aims to construct a 10-megawatt biomethane facility in Northern Ireland. The cluster will play a pivotal role in developing biorefineries throughout the region. “By utilizing animal waste, we aim to drive innovation to create more renewable biomethane for the consumer and reduce the usage of fossil fuels, which is paramount for reducing our global carbon footprint and GHG emissions, thus benefiting the environment,” said Dr. Patrick Ward, Ph.D., Europe and Asia-Pacific Applications Manager at Alltech. Do we want to live courageous lives or hide in the shadows? Agriculture has the world’s two most important jobs: nourishing the world and preserving our planet for future generations. Effectively communicating about this essential work can be very challenging, as our industry faces misleading headlines and incorrect assumptions about the impact of agriculture on our environment. The fact is our industry isn’t simple, and we are further from consumers than ever at a time when agriculture plays a more critical role in our collective future.  This year, we’re shining the spotlight on agriculture’s vital role through our upcoming documentary, World Without Cows. Regardless of the audience’s connection to beef or dairy or agriculture in general, the resounding opinion is clear: the story of animal agriculture needs to be told — and told in a compelling and relatable way. At World Pork Expo a few weeks ago, our team hosted a thought-provoking panel about this very topic with Dr. Frank Mitloehner of UC Davis CLEAR Center; Maria Zieba from the National Pork Producers Council; and Dr. Gordon D. Spronk of PIPESTONE. (Watch it here: https://bit.ly/4cR8Uc0). The panelists highlighted the power of storytelling. I carried this same theme with me this week as I visited team members in Costa Rica, and as I prepare to present Alltech’s new case study on leadership succession to agri-food leaders in Mexico on Thursday at the Capacitación ANFACA-IPADE IN COMPANY event. Next week in Louisville, Kentucky, we will discuss the future of poultry research at the Poultry Science Association’s annual meeting and consider how the themes explored in #WorldWithoutCows relate to the entire agri-food industry. As Dr. Mitloehner said in our panel discussion, we are the subject matter experts, and it is time to tell our incredible story. Our mission is not just about raising awareness — it’s about inspiring and empowering action. The future of agriculture hinges on our ability to innovate and collaborate, ensuring we can sustainably feed a growing global population and combat climate change. But we can’t do it alone. So, for those who wish to join us in advocating for science, sustainability and telling the stories of the agri-food sector, consider this your invitation to help us start the conversation around World Without Cows.
