To create meaning and improve quality, we must break down performance into such detail and with such transparency that the metrics we use or contests we create are explainable not only in our field but across different industries, where they may serve as a model. After attending the Medical Affairs Strategic Summit with global leaders in pharma and biotech this week and watching the conclusion of the Eurovision 2024 Contest over the weekend, I integrated some personal lessons from two completely different fields in which it is quite challenging to measure performance and interpret messages as they are intended - that of Music and Healthcare in the latest issue of the "InWeekend" journal. The question it addresses is how to design a competition and measure quality as objectively as possible to stimulate clear interpretation of the message, performance as well as the future improvement of both over time. #medicalaffairs #eurovision2024 #performancemetrics

What I have found in coaching many individuals is that--in large part because of the pandemic--they have a more holistic and broader view of what contentment, happiness and/or fulfillment means beyond employment. "Engagement" as defined by Gallup centers on the role of the employer. We are not acknowledging enough that many people are re-defining how they find meaning in life beyond their employer. What in isolation may appear to be a drop in "engagement" (at work) could also be described as a major re-calibration on the part of a workforce that is finding meaning and "engagement" in many other ways outside of work.
