About us
The Alliance for Tribal Energy 501(c)(3) is an Indigenous-led nonprofit that supports the self-determined efforts of Native American tribes to transition away from extractive and exploitive energy systems to a clean and regenerative energy future. Formerly known as the Indigenous Energy Initiative (IEI), the organization was founded in 2016 by Chéri Smith, a woman of Native American and European descent with 20+ years of senior leadership and consulting roles with organizations including Tesla/SolarCity, U.S. Department of Energy, Interstate Renewable Energy Council, American Council on Renewable Energy, New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, and Boston University. The organization is guided by a Native-led board and leadership team that includes experienced tribal government, business, cultural, and spiritual leaders, ensuring that we uphold Indigenous values and honor Native lifeways in all we do. Our diverse and growing team of staff and contractors includes Indigenous and non-Indigenous energy experts with specialties in renewable energy technology, policy, finance, education, and workforce development.

As the United States celebrates its independence from British rule throughout the weekend, we're reflecting on our nation's history and the centuries of injustice that continues to be experienced by Native peoples. This holiday, which commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence, reminds us that while proclaiming equality for all, the document refers to Native Americans as "merciless Indian Savages." This 4th of July weekend, while enjoying time with friends and family, we invite you to join us in honoring the resilience and fortitude of Native communities and advancing our commitment to justice for Indigenous peoples. Stay safe! 📷 : from our relatives at First Nations Development Institute #mercilessindiansavages #nativeamericans #freedom #soveriegnty

"When it comes to renewable energy development, capacity is usually the number one barrier. Tribes tell us it's great that the Bipartisan Infrastucture Law and Inflation Reduction Act are making these unprecedented investments, but without the capacity to go after that money, tribes are concerned they could be left behind. In December of 2023, President Biden signed the Executive Order 14112 that touches on reforming the Federal Trust Responsibility with tribes." Gratitude to Dr. Raymond “Studie” RedCorn (Osage, Policy Analyst, Office of Indian Energy, U.S. Department of Energy), for his remarks on energy equity policy initiatives at the second annual Tribal Energy Equity Summit. 💡⚡ #TribalCleanEnergy #TEES2024 #EO14112 #TribalSovereignty #trustresponsibility #EnergySoverignty #JustTransition

"This years summit sessions are workshops of possibility - incubators for innovative solutions. The exchange of idea and experiences among among tribal leaders, energy experts, and stakeholders is a testament to the collaborative spirit that define this moment." Thank you to Chairman David Sickey (Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana, Senior Consultant, Tribal Energy Finance Program, Loan Programs Office, U.S. Department of Energy) for his recognition of the important work done at #TEES2024! ☀️🍃 #TribalCleanEnergy #EnergyEquity #JustTransition #BigIdeas #ClimateJustice #Collaboration
