Such a dynamic discussion today on "AI in Health: Navigating New Frontiers" at the Alliance for Health Policy focused on how AI is revolutionizing healthcare delivery, enhancing system efficiencies, and addressing workforce shortages. This is an area of great interest for the American Medical Association. Great to be on stage with: - Ian Blunt - VP of Advanced Analytics, Highmark Health - Danielle Lloyd - SVP of Private Market Innovations & Quality Initiatives, America’s Health Insurance Plans - John Whyte - Chief Medical Officer, WebMD A key issue raised today was liability as liability is a significant issue when introducing any new digital health tool, especially those powered by AI. AI tools that provide clinical decision support or treatment recommendations introduce new risks for physicians. This is why physicians must not rely solely on AI for diagnoses or treatment recommendations without fully understanding them as there is a heightened level of risk for physicians if the AI provides incorrect recommendations. The potential for liability resulting from inaccurate AI models or misuse of AI is a major and growing area of interest in the medical-legal field and there is much to be sorted out: what happens when an AI tool recommends a personalized course of treatment for a cancer patient, which if incorrect, leads to adverse outcomes for the patient and liability for the physician? There are many important issues to sort out to ensure physicians and our patients can all benefit from these emerging tools. #AIinHealthcare #HealthPolicy #Innovation #HealthcareRevolution

I had the pleasure of attending the AI in health summit hosted by Alliance for Health Policy. One of the highlights for me was seeing the collective commitment to responsible AI. The emphasis on ethical considerations and the need for equitable AI to serve all, without compromise, was refreshing! Certainly an encouraging sign for my research direction :)

Dr. Geeta Nayyar, MD, MBA , Jeffery Smith , and Deven McGraw were excellent on the Alliance for Health Policy panel The “Goldilocks” Principle: How Do We Get Health AI Regulation “Just Right” to Encourage Innovation and Protect Americans? I gathered tons of insights, got a copy of Dr G’s WSJ bestseller "Dead Wrong: Diagnosing and Treating Healthcare's Misinformation Illness”, and chatted with long lost connections like Donna Cryer, Jodi Goldstein Daniel, and Anna McCollister. We all have a lot to look forward to with AI in healthcare, and a lot to be cautious about to avoid exacerbating existing health disparities.

It's 2024, do you know if your data is being used to train #AI? The truth is, you probably don't know (I don't), but you should hope that it is (with the appropriate consent and safeguards in place). Why? Because unless we train #healthAI on diverse datasets that represent all people and the many variables that shape their health, we will continue to replicate and reinforce the same biases and issues that plague today's health care delivery system. Yesterday, I have the privilege of attending the Alliance for Health Policy's excellent and informative AI in Health Summit in Washington, DC. The speakers were thoughtful, informed, and unafraid to say the quiet parts out loud. I know I leave the conference with a deeper understanding of the ways AI is going to shape our health care system and even more activated to do something about it. #healthAI #AIinhealth #healthequity #healthdata
