The City and Borough of Wrangell is thrilled to announce that it has been selected to receive a $25,000,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) Grant program. These funds will be used for the Wrangell Harbor Basin Revitalization and Transportation Resiliency Project. “This grant is a tremendous opportunity for Wrangell,” said Patty Gilbert, Mayor of Wrangell. “The revitalization of our harbor basin is critical to ensuring the continued success of our community. This project will improve safety, accessibility, and efficiency for residents, businesses, and visitors who rely on our marine transportation network.” The Wrangell Harbor Basin Revitalization and Transportation Resiliency Project will design, permit, and construct modern float and anchoring systems within the Wrangell Harbor Basin. This will improve the safety and reliability of docking for all vessels. The project will also build new water, electrical, and fire suppression systems to enhance overall functionality and safety. Additionally, the grant will fund the relocation of Inner Harbor parking to ensure continued convenient access for the community. “We are grateful to the USDOT for recognizing the importance of this project,” said Mason Villarma, Borough Manager of Wrangell. “I want to thank our amazing team here at the Borough for bringing these funds home. This grant will allow us to make significant improvements to our harbor infrastructure, which will benefit our community for decades to come.” The Wrangell Harbor Basin Revitalization and Transportation Resiliency Project will create jobs, improve safety, and boost the local economy. The Borough is committed to working closely with stakeholders throughout the planning and construction process.

ANTHC Contaminated Sites Program in partnership with the Center for Creative Land Recycling supported an Environmental Justice Roadshow on the Alaska Native Health Campus. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been scheduling and presenting these Roadshows in different regions throughout the U.S. More than 120 participants from various agencies and Alaska communities attended. The event provided information on the numerous funding and resource opportunities, as well as a chance for attendees to interface directly with funders and receive technical assistance on their projects/applications. One such funding opportunity is the EPA’s new Environmental and Climate Justice Community Change Grants program (Community Change Grants). The EPA announced a Notice of Funding Opportunity for approximately $2 billion dollars in Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) funds in environmental and climate justice activities to benefit disadvantaged communities through projects that reduce pollution, increase community climate resilience, and build community capacity to address environmental and climate justice challenges.
