  • Our summer staff includes a whole crew of maintenance workers devoted to making AUSD spaces safe and well functioning. Take Robert Navarro, a Preventative Maintenance Technician, who in one 38-day period this summer responded to 77 work orders, including for ceiling tile, lighting, and restroom equipment replacements. Robert is known across the district for responding quickly and efficiently to all sorts of urgent issues - including those involving carpentry, plumbing, electricity, and locks. Thank you, Robert! Looking for a job in maintenance and/or facilities in a supportive public school district? We have a number of jobs listed on our Job Opportunities page: https://lnkd.in/g9vsiauw #wearealamedaunified

  • Alameda Unified and other agencies in the City often work closely together to support children, families, and staff. It's part of what makes our community such a caring place to live and work. In the wake of the tragic shooting deaths of an AUSD family earlier this month, Alameda Family Services will hold a workshop on Talking to Young Children About Grief on August 1. The workshop will offer resources and ideas on helping young children navigate loss. Childcare is available; teens are welcome to attend. RSVP via QR code by July 26 at 6 pm. 6:00 pm Alameda Family Services 2325 Clement Avenue, Alameda #WeAreAlamedaUnified

  • One of AUSD's current #ausdmeasureb projects is a new HVAC system at the former Longfellow campus, which now serves Alameda Child Development Center and Island High School. The one-year-old HVAC units were originally installed at Wood Middle School, as it had been scheduled for modernization. Ultimately, the Wood Design Committee decided the best option would be to completely re-design and re-build the campus, however. As such, AUSD's Construction Department has pulled 14 HVAC units from Wood and is installing them at Longfellow so that both ACDC and Island can benefit from vastly improved heating and cooling starting in August. Added benefit: The new HVAC units run on electricity versus gas-powered steam, and the project includes the installation of a heat pump and new transformer. #thankualameda

  • What do AUSD summer people do all day? Our Second Summer Spotlight is Alberto Garcia, an Instructional Technology Technician and nine-year veteran of AUSD. During the summer, he preps devices such as laptops, projectors, and Chromebooks for the coming year. In addition to working on technology, Alberto says his favorite part of the job is getting to know folks at the school sites. Thanks for all you do, Alberto! #wearealamedaunified

  • Alameda Unified has a robust bond and facilities program that includes modernization of campuses and facilities across the district. This summer, Wood Middle School will be demolished and, over the next two years, replaced with a brand new campus. Students and staff will be housed on a temporary campus just across a park from the old Wood campus. As of this week, all of the temporary classrooms have been delivered and are now getting outfitted with electricity, internet, plumbing, and other final connections. Meanwhile, professional movers are moving classroom furnishings, books, and supplies from Wood Middle School to the new portables so they are ready for teachers and students on August 15. The construction of a new campus for Wood Middle School is part of AUSD's bond program and is being funded by the 2022 Measure B. #ausdmeasureb #wearealamedaunified #thankualameda

  • Most of our teachers and principals are off for the summer, but plenty of AUSD staff are hard at work running summer programs and preparing for the next school year. We're going to introduce our community to just a few of those folks over the next several weeks. First up: Jessica Stockwell, a Department Office Specialist for AUSD's enrollment program. Jessica told us she loves meeting and staying connected to AUSD families and working with the Student Services team! Want to join a hard-working team that supports students and families all year round? • "We encourage you to stay connected to family and friends in the coming days, to stay alert to signs of emotional distress in your children and yourself, and to seek support if you need it," Superintendent Scuderi wrote in a message to AUSD families and staff about the shooting tragedy last week. "As a community, Alameda has shown itself to be strong, kind, and generous time and time again, and I hope we all can draw on those qualities to help ourselves and each other process this terrible incident." The full message includes links to guides on talking to children about gun violence and homicide, as well as mental health resources for families and staff who are struggling after the shooting. • Eighty-eight years ago this month, AUSD was born when the Board of Education for the Alameda High School District and the Alameda School District voted to combine the two into one "Alameda Unified School District." The Board's vote was in response to new state legislation requiring high school and elementary school districts with "coterminous" boundaries to merge. That same year, Alameda residents voted to give the westernmost part of the island to the federal government to be used as a naval air base, and the Alameda Free Library's West End Branch building was built. The Park Street Bridge had been completed just one year before. #ThrowbackThursday #TBT #publiceducation #K12 #WeareAlamedaUnified
