We recently had a group of 17 self-advocates and 4 staff members attend the SANYS LI Regional Conference at the Melville Marriot. This conference is a big deal because it is built for self-advocates and their advisors to interact with others on Long Island and the workshops are based on topics that provide information and support that is relatable for them. We are proud to announce that our group took home 2 awards at the conference, that deserve a huge round of applause. James D., from AHRC Suffolk's Bohemia PWW Day Hab Program, was presented the “Self Advocate of the Year Award!” James is always advocating for what he believes is right, and always makes sure that his voice is heard to make changes for himself and his community. Doriann Adams, AHRC Suffolk Director of Staff Development & Education and Self Advocate Advisor, was presented the “Advisor of the Year Award.” Doriann has worked for this agency for almost 38 years and has always gone above and beyond to be an ally and a friend to the people we support. We are beyond thankful to have a committed and big-hearted person like Doriann to lead the group of self-advocates here at AHRC Suffolk. Congratulations to all!

We would like to extend a special thank you to the Long Island University Mens Football Team for having our crew stop by for some drills and positive vibes! This event was made possible thanks to Tony Gionfriddo with The Beautiful Lives Project! 🏈 We strive to make community connections and appreciate partnerships like this one because they turn into opportunities for the people we support. They have not stopped smiling or talking about all the fun that was had. We have one fearless group of guys and they made these drills look easy! The Beautiful Lives Project’s mission is to give people with disabilities the opportunity to actively participate in activities and events that may not have been available to them previously due to physical or facility limitations.
