    If you're responsible for managing people, it means more than overseeing their work product. The best managers - those who are true leaders - see their roles as teachers of staff. As such, it makes sense that we favor a "teacher tip" for supporting staff members learning new skills. I DO - During this step, the teacher literally shows the student how to do something brand new; usually more than once. Instead of long division or writing a solid thesis though, you're showing your staff member how YOU do a task. Afterwards, debrief: What did they see you do? What concrete steps did you take? How did you handle areas of challenge? We Do - In this step, the teacher does the problem collaboratively with the students, eliciting input and feedback along the way. At work, perhaps you're collaboratively planning the meeting or co-facilitating the presentation. Again, debrief after the fact to lock in the learning. You Do - This is the independent worktime in a classroom and your chance to watch your staff member in action at work. It's their turn to do the work solo while you observe. The debrief after is still critical, and should include concrete feedback from you as well as the staff member's reflections. This gradual release works as well in the boardroom as it does in the classroom - try it! #teachertip #managertip #elevatebyagile #leaderdevelopment

    Have an employee who just isn't meeting expectations? Sometimes, despite your best efforts and clear feedback conversations, you'll experience this scary situation. The good news is that you have options. We advise selecting from 3: 1) Target support by providing additional training or resources - this a great choice when you're pretty sure your employee is simply lacking the skills or knowledge needed to perform at the level you expect. 🧠 2) Up the ante with a performance plan. This more formal process is used to address ongoing performance problems. A strong PIP should include clear goals with deadlines and benchmarks to meeting those goals, as well as consequences if the team member fails to improve. 🗎 3) Let go with a reassignment or termination. We know it really sucks, but sometimes this last resort just needs to happen. DO make sure you're super clear on your company's existing policies (talk to HR and/or your lawyer) before you take this action! 🗙 ❇️If you're struggling with employee performance, Agile can help.     The CDC says that 7% of adults - that's 18 billion people - have had or currently have long COVID. Defined as experiencing symptoms for at least three months after having the virus, long COVID can be truly debilitating. It's important for employers to know that long COIVD can be considered a disability under the Americans with Disabilities (ADA) Act, which means employees are entitled to accommodations if they need them. In addition to the accommodations noted here, employers should work with their staff members to determine what they need to do their jobs and collaboratively discuss what's reasonable.     A PeoplePath research study found that Boomerangs - or high-performing former employees - were a strong talent source for 68% of reporting companies. The remaining 32%? Just haven't thought about it yet! When a high-performing employee leaves, it's easy to want to cut ties with them...but that's a mistake. Alumni rehires are a strong source of excellent talent and the best organizations are smart about maintaining relationships with those people. Do so with these simple steps: ✨Offer to serve as a reference for the departing employee. They'll thank you and remember the gesture. ✨Keep former employee information updated in your HRIS system. ✨Consider a corporate alumni program which reaches out to former employees several times a year.
