After School Matters provides life-changing program opportunities to more 18,000 Chicago teens every year.
About us
Each year, After School Matters provides life-changing after-school and summer program opportunities to nearly 19,000 Chicago high school teens. Our hands-on, project-based apprenticeship and internship programs – in the arts, communications and leadership, sports and STEM – allow teens to explore and develop their talents, while gaining critical skills for work, college and beyond. After School Matters full-time staff of approximately 85 supports the day-to-day operations and administration of the organization, as well as the provision of our signature programs across the city, while hundreds of individuals across Chicago work with us part-time as After School Matters instructors and program providers. We seek to serve our teens and achieve our mission by: • Advocating for teens and youth development • Building opportunities for teens through partnerships • Engaging teens in skills development for work and higher education • Showcasing teen accomplishments • Disseminating research and best practices about out-of-school time for teens

This summer, After School Matters teens are collaborating with Related Midwest, Related Affordable Foundation, and the Related South Shore property to create an inspiring mural! 🌟 Teens, residents, and ASM instructor Roho Garcia came together to brainstorm themes and a main message, envisioning the mural reflecting feelings of peace, home, safety, love, belonging, positivity, and unity. As we prepare to kick off our summer programs, Melissa Mister, our Chief of Staff and Strategy, met with the Chicago Sun-Times Editorial Board to discuss the importance of offering young people productive opportunities to learn and grow in safe spaces. When young people feel properly supported through quality programs, “they really do strive and thrive,” something Melissa has witnessed with our teens. Data suggests young people who participate in ASM programs are two times more likely than their peers to graduate high school and one-and-a-half times more likely to enroll in college.
