America needs changes to the federal policies impacting how we permit and site electric transmission, energy generation, and mining projects for the critical minerals needed to power many advanced energy technologies. And we need #PermittingReform at the state-level too. In our latest blog post, by our Managing Director Trish Demeter, we discuss our newly developed ⚡ Guide to Reforming State-Level Siting and Permitting Policies ⚡. These policy principles provide guidance for state-level decision-makers seeking to balance community interests with the need to meet growing energy needs, improve power grid reliability, and meet clean energy goals. ⤵️

#Nevada's electricity demands are going up 📈 Virtual power plants (VPPs) can be the solution! VPPs are a powerful tool that act as a connector between distributed energy resources (DERs) and result in affordable and reliable energy solutions💡 Our latest blog by United’s Brian T. Turner, Sheila Hallstrom & Chloe Holden lays out a set of best practices that are critical to maximizing the benefits of DERs and VPPs in Nevada resource planning. “VPPs can provide the same kind of reliability and enhanced economic value compared with centralized power plants – but only if they are designed to take full advantage of the thousands of DERs that Nevada homeowners and business owners are installing each year.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gnrqtqYz

Meeting our climate goals will require electrifying not only transportation, but buildings. I'm excited to have had the chance to co-author this report to provide a toolkit for modernizing regulation to advance building electrification. I enjoyed working with Brad Cebulko, Ron Nelson, Matthew McDonnell, and the team at Advanced Energy United on this!
Electrification trends are fundamentally changing our energy system needs, but the way we regulate gas utilities hasn’t kept pace. Customers are getting caught in the crosshairs. That is why we partnered with Strategen to create a guide that aims to help policymakers, regulators, and stakeholders understand the available options for reform. On our blog, Sarah Steinberg writes, “The time is ripe for a re-examination of this [regulatory] model, for some out-of-the-box thinking and hard conversations, and for some thoughtful implementation of new tools and strategies.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/evcTRc8c Read our report: https://lnkd.in/eg3bnMX7

Growing electricity demand is putting pressure on Nevada’s grid. The solution to this problem? Virtual Power Plants! VPPs can increase energy reliability and affordability in Nevada, help the state meet its clean energy goals, and create new jobs in the energy sector. My team and I at Advanced Energy United are excited to present a report that highlights the important role VPPs will play in a clean energy future and urges Nevada to further integrate these plants into their future development plans. Representative John Curtis is absolutely right: "I don't care what your climate goal is, what your energy goal is, what your broadband goal is...it can't be accomplished right now because it's being blocked." We need comprehensive permitting reform to continue to grow & maintain our grid. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eu3-Sk7B

Congrats to the DOE Grid Deployment Office at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for working to improve the process for planning new electric #transmission lines, critical to meeting America's growing energy needs, improving grid reliability, and supporting economic development! This is the #InflationReductionAct in action, with $370 million going to 20 projects across 16 states. “Today, every pocket of the country is experiencing the grueling impact of extreme weather and there’s no doubt that we must expand our transmission grid to get more clean, resilient power to more people, in more places,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm. Learn more here or in the post below from U.S. DOE's Jeff Dennis ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/ee4hJs3e
Deputy Director for Transmission Development, US DOE Grid Deployment Office; Chair at American Bar Association Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources (SEER)
Today, our team announced the first round of grant recipients under the Inflation Reduction Act's Transmission Siting and Economic Development (TSED) Grant Program. The TSED program allows U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to provide grants to (1) state and local siting authorities to help them efficiently and effectively process permit applications for new interstate transmission lines and (2) local governments to support economic development projects in communities impacted by the construction or operation of new transmission. The goal? Reduce the time required for, and improve the chances of success, permitting of much needed new transmission infrastructure. Today's first round of selections includes four projects proposed by state and local siting authorities to improve and streamline their siting processes or evaluate alternative routes for key projects, and 16 economic development projects that will upgrade critical community infrastructure like water treatment and fire safety services, provide job and workforce training, and much more. You can see the full list of projects here: https://lnkd.in/dQDMaV6T These investments will support the timely development of transmission projects emerging from Midcontinent ISO's Long-Range Transmission Planning Process and PJM's Regional Transmission Expansion Plan, several proposed projects to add interregional capacity in the Midwest and Southwest, and key offshore wind transmission interconnections. Another terrific job by the team in DOE Grid Deployment Office to launch yet another first of its kind program!
