About us
ABFE is a membership-based philanthropic organization that advocates for responsive and transformative investments in Black communities. Partnering with foundations, nonprofits and individuals, ABFE provides its members with professional development and technical assistance resources that further the philanthropic sector’s connection and responsiveness to issues of equity, diversity and inclusion. Established in 1971 as the Association of Black Foundation Executives, the organization was credited with many of philanthropy’s early gains in diversity. It since has evolved into an influential network. In 2013, the organization shed its descriptor and adopted the simpler ABFE (ab-fee) to better reflect its broadening membership. Sonya Massey’s tragic death at the hands of police in Springfield, Illinois, after calling 911 for help, is a harrowing reminder of the urgent need for systemic reform. In her final moments, she sought safety but was met with violence, underscoring the deep-rooted issues of police brutality and racial disparities that continue to plague our society. This heartbreaking incident highlights the importance of ABFE’s 10 Imperatives, which call for comprehensive action against anti-Black racism and systemic injustice. Our fight to build agency, push for structural change, and advocate for policy reform is more crucial than ever. We demand that Officer Grayson face full prosecution and urge for sweeping reforms to address the deep-seated inequities in our systems. Sandra Bland. Breonna Taylor. George Floyd. Michelle Cusseaux. Atatiana Jefferson. Tamir Rice. Elijah McClain. Philando Castile. Rayshard Brooks. As we now add Sonya Massey’s story to this painful legacy of Black lives lost to systemic violence, we honor their memory by persistently fighting for racial justice and equity. Read our article, "ABFE Remembers Sonya Massey: A Philanthropic Call for Lasting Change," to learn about our ongoing commitment to Sonya’s memory and the important measures we are advocating for to tackle these enduring injustices. Sonya Massey should be alive today. Access the full article: https://lnkd.in/gm4FBb4n
