Aliyah Snyder, PhD, had Olympic dreams before a series of concussions ended her skeleton career. Plagued by debilitating symptoms — headaches, loss of concentration, anxiety, and trouble coping with stress — Snyder decided to study neuropsychology , to learn and develop effective treatments for herself and others like her. More than 15 years later, she leads the Holistic Interventions for Brain Health and Recovery clinic at the University of Florida in Gainesville and does research into neuroresilience, an emerging field studying the ability of the brain to repair itself after trauma. AAMCNews talked to Snyder, and Giulio Maria Pasinetti, MD, PhD, of Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, about the latest research that may explain why some people recover from trauma better than others – and how that can someday improve treatment and prevention. Marc Diamond, director of the Center for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases in the Peter O'Donnell Jr. Brain Institute at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, also discusses how a multidisciplinary approach to the brain could propel the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases — like Alzheimer’s — forward.
