A Glimmer of Hope supports causes and initiatives that impact young women with breast cancer, 6 million dollars raised!
About us
A Glimmer of Hope Foundation, ‘the symbol of the cure”, is widely recognized in the Pittsburgh area. For the past twenty years, the foundation has been dedicated to raising funds to further breast cancer research in pre-menopausal women. Since the incidence of breast cancer in women under forty is increasing, the foundation is positioning itself to expand its effort to a national level in order to focus more attention to this alarming development. It now seems to be the appropriate time to renew efforts and expand our focus, hosting more events each year. In addition to the Bid for Hope event, we have hosted Pitch for Hope with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Clays for the Cure with Home Depot, and much more in the past year. Now is the time to push to cure this disease, and we are more active than ever. Help us to find a cure by sending your volunteer information to: info@symbolofthecure.com

The Center may not cure every disease in its late stages, but it will give every patient hope and make their lives a little easier. That’s why we give. We give because of hope. We give because of healing. We give because of Carol Jo. I know if Carol Jo were alive today, she’d be proud of the Center. I don’t doubt that she’s here with every patient . I know she knows what we’ve accomplished. -Diana Napper ✨ Also, thank you to AHN! If we did not have this partnership the center would not be here today. https://lnkd.in/eJ5GyS_m Second Picture:Carol Jo 💛

Exciting news in #breastcancer research! A clinical trial at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital and UPMC Hillman Cancer Center aimed at developing a vaccine against early-stage breast cancer hit an important milestone: its first patient received her final dose of the vaccine. Maria Kitay, of Pittsburgh's North Hills, became the first person to receive a full course of the vaccine, developed after decades of research by Dr. Olivera Finn, distinguished professor of Immunology at the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC Hillman. Her vaccine doses were administered at UPMC Hillman at the UPMC Magee-Womens Cancer Center. The vaccine trial was seeded by a $100,000 grant from A Glimmer of Hope Foundation, which was founded with the goal of funding programs, treatments, and research targeting breast cancer. Thank you, to our GOH board for supporting this wonderful trial. Always leading the way. What's raised here, stays here. 🖤💛
Today, our team administered the final dose of the first-ever vaccine for early-stage breast cancer. Vaccine science has been a focus at UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh for decades. Today marks a significant milestone spanning more than 30 years of research. This breast cancer vaccine, administered over three doses, attempts to stop cancer cells before they become invasive. As part of this clinical trial, our researchers will evaluate how well the immune systems of patients newly diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ respond to the vaccine. The research happening today in Pittsburgh drives the scientific breakthroughs of tomorrow. We are proud to bring together expertise from UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, the University of Pittsburgh, and Magee-Womens Research Institute. Today would not be possible without the visionary work of Dr. Olivera Finn, an immunologist at UPMC Hillman and Pitt. Dr. Finn has devoted her career to finding a vaccine for breast cancer. In overseeing this trial, Dr. Finn is working alongside Dr. Emilia Diego, a surgical oncologist and co-director of the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital Breast Cancer Program, and Dr. Julia Foldi, a leading medical oncologist at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and Magee-Womens Cancer Center. We wish to thank A Glimmer of Hope Foundation, which awarded the team a grant to launch this trial. We are exceptionally grateful to Maria, a Pittsburgh area resident, for being the first patient to enroll in the trial. Clinical trial participants like her make medical advancements possible. Congratulations to the exceptional clinical and research teams that made today a reality. Your efforts will impact so many lives.

UPMC and University of Pittsburgh researchers announced in August they would be testing the vaccine. The $100,000 seed money needed to launch the clinical trial came from the Pittsburgh-area nonprofit Glimmer of Hope, which was founded with the goal of funding programs, treatments and research targeting breast cancer.
