About us

Mission Our mission is to increase substantially the number of well-educated young people of color who are capable of assuming positions of responsibility and leadership in American society. History In 1963 at the height of the civil rights movement, 23 headmasters of selective independent schools made a mutual commitment to change the profiles and compositions of their student bodies. Through A Better Chance, they would broaden their enrollment to include students of color who were economically disadvantaged but academically able. Chosen for their motivation and demonstrated achievement, 55 students from low-income families were selected to complete their secondary education at these founding independent schools. A Better Chance Scholars are a racially diverse group. Approximately 65% are African-American; 20% Latino; 6% Asian American; about 1% Native American; and 8% describe themselves as multi-racial or other. Approximately one-third live at or below the federal poverty line, and virtually all come from working class families. More than 65% of our Scholars come from single-parent households. A Better Chance has grown from 55 students enrolled at nine schools to nearly 1,900 students enrolled in 2008/2009 school year.

Happy National Intern Day! A Better Chance is proud to highlight three incredible interns working with Scholar and Alumni Success (SAS) and Information Technology Teams this summer! Life-long Brooklyn resident and ABC Alumni Julian Reyes is a rising Sophomore at Morehouse College in Atlanta. Driven by his Black and Dominican Heritage, he is deeply connected to identity work and social activism. They drive his personal mission and compel him to do more, be more, and impact more. He attended Friends Seminary for high school and was involved in various leadership positions throughout his time there. He was the Social Chief of the Black Culture Club and the Leader of the Latinx Culture Club. Julian was also President of the Service Committee, a branch of student government that promotes social justice and civic engagement. Now, Julian double majors in finance and political science, focusing on learning how to dismantle systems of prejudice and racism. He hopes to get into banking and politics to help Black people reclaim the wealth and freedom that they have been locked out of for centuries. As a member of Get on the Bus, he travels to cities around the US to spread the mission of Morehouse to disadvantaged high schoolers. As Treasurer of the DuBois House Council, he managed the Council’s funds, hosting events and activities for House residents. As a member of the SGA’s N’Tern Academy, he engaged in the mission of putting students’ needs first at Morehouse College. On the SAS team, he connects with Scholars and families, researches summer opportunities, and works on college readiness projects. Julian recalls his experience, saying, "ABC has shown me that there are endless opportunities out there for success and growth. During my time as an ABC scholar and alumnus, I have been inspired to improve academically, develop interpersonally, and strive for new heights. I am proud to intern at ABC this summer, working to empower the next generation of scholars and leaders". Thank you to Julian and the ABC Interns for an amazing summer so far!
