Our partners at the University of Utah have won a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to support the extraction of rare earth elements and critical minerals in #Utah. This effort is vital to securing critical supply chains and decreasing our reliance on the foreign supply of critical minerals. ⛏️ Read more below! ↘️
🚀 Exciting News from the University of Utah! 🚀 I am thrilled to announce that our team has been awarded a highly competitive $5 million grant from the Department of Energy (DOE) under the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) to advance our project on rare earth elements (REE) and critical minerals (CM)! 🌟 As part of President Biden's Investing in America agenda, this funding will support our innovative efforts to upgrade mineral resources, optimize extraction and separation processes, and produce refined REE and CM metals with an outstanding purity. Our project will also receive an additional cost match, further strengthening our capabilities. This grant is part of a broader $10 million initiative funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to reduce the costs and environmental impact of producing critical minerals from coal and its by-products. By harnessing secondary and unconventional resources, we aim to reduce reliance on foreign supply chains and bolster U.S. clean energy technologies, including solar panels, wind turbines, electric vehicles, and hydrogen fuel cells. Here’s a glimpse into the broader vision from the DOE: “President Biden’s Investing in America agenda is reducing the nation’s dependence on foreign supply chains by reimagining the use of coal waste and by-products as a domestic source of the critical minerals needed for clean energy technologies,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. “The investments announced today will not only increase our national security and ensure a cleaner environment but will also help deliver high-quality jobs throughout the country.” Our project at the University of Utah will focus on producing high-purity rare earth oxides, salts, metals, and critical minerals from abundant, low-grade coal by-products using cutting-edge separation technologies. We are excited to be part of this transformative effort to build a sustainable domestic supply chain and contribute to the future of clean energy and national security. We are currently seeking motivated graduate students, research scientists, and postdoctoral researchers to join our team and contribute to this groundbreaking project. If you are passionate about advancing technologies in this field and are looking for an opportunity to make a significant impact, we would love to hear from you! A huge thank you to the DOE for their support, and congratulations to Caltech, who is also recognized in this funding round. Here is news release: https://lnkd.in/dsyUCsrQ Stay tuned for more updates as we embark on this groundbreaking journey! #RareEarthElements #CriticalMinerals #CleanEnergy #DOE #Innovation #SustainableFuture #EV #Magnets
