About us
80% of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are unemployed. We are changing this. 321 Coffee is a coffee shop and roaster built on inclusion. Based in Raleigh, NC, 321 currently employs over 50 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). They are the ones roasting the coffee, taking the orders, and making the lattes. We are demonstrating the value of an inclusive business model. The company was founded in 2017 by Lindsay Wrege and Michael Evans. The two met during their freshman year as Park Scholars at NC State University. They had the vision to build a company founded on inclusion. The team began in 2017 by setting up on folding tables with a home coffee brewer and brought this setup anywhere that would welcome them. These events helped to develop a presence in the community. Raleigh rallied behind the mission and helped 321 grow beyond folding tables. Today, 321 Coffee operates a coffee shop in Downtown Raleigh, Downtown Durham, at the NC State Farmers Market, in Pendo's HQ, and more in the pipeline to expand our impact. We roast our own coffee, offer a full-scale espresso menu, and partner with over 50 different companies to provide them with coffee. Together, we are building a company that stands for inclusion and doing business the right way.

It’s with deeply heavy hearts that we share with you that Mike Hanlon, or “Big Mike” as he was better known in our Farmers Market shop, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 22. From the day Mike joined the 321 Coffee team as in summer 2022, the shop was never the same. Mike brought a larger than life presence to work everyday, and so fiercely believed in people in a way that brought out the very best in them. He empowered a whole new level of skill, teamwork, and confidence among all the baristas under his leadership. He’d often come to management meetings eager to share stories from the weekend at the shop of how his job had simply become to set his team up for success, and then get out of their way. He created a space where everyone could be unapologetically themselves, knew how to make people laugh, and loved big. A few months ago, Mike wrote the following reflection about the Farmers Market shop. His passion for inclusion and impact on our community shines through every word. “This old stall is where it all began and it’s where we continue to evolve and grow and push the limits of what we can achieve and shatter the expectations we have of ourselves and our mission. We have been lucky to get here, but really luck is just a euphemism for destiny dressed in hard work clothes. You’ll notice one of us in every place you’ve ever worked, the jokers, the introverts, the ones you’d give your last nickel to if they’d just be quiet for 5 minutes, the tough ones, the sensitive ones, the ones who give it all and the ones who are trying to find their way. We’re no different, we just approach things with a different attitude. No one succeeds unless we all succeed and it is only through elevating those around us that we truly elevate ourselves. The reason this place is so special is not because of what we sell, but because of what we demonstrate on a daily basis, joy and positivity are everywhere. Come drink it in with us, all are welcome. If you care to look around, the proof is undeniable. We’re not perfect, but look how amazing being imperfect can be. We’ll save a seat for you.” Thank you for always saving a seat for us, Big Mike. Our Farmers Market shop will be closed through this Friday, July 26 to allow our team time to grieve this immeasurable loss. To our 321 Coffee Community, We have loved every moment of our last two years in Durham and growing within this vibrant community. As we look towards the fall, we have made the decision to not renew the lease for our Durham shop at the end of this summer as our team transitions to launch our newest location on NC State’s Centennial Campus. We’re thrilled that you’ll still be able to see our Durham team working at our other shop locations around the Triangle, as well as through events with the 321 Coffee Cart! We are proud to be retaining everyone on our team. With great opportunities ahead of us and great people on our team to achieve them, we’re excited for the future.
