Co-founder and CEO of 3.1 Phillip Lim, Wen Zhou featured in New York Magazine The Cut's 'How I Get It Done' series: https://lnkd.in/eky4CN52 "I’m not working 80 hours a week. My secret weapon is that in every single division, every single team, we have great leaders. I have experts that know how to do their job much better than I can. I’m really there as a guardrail when they need it. Along the way, we’re just checking in. There’s no huge surprises. There’s no derailment. Phillip always says that working in fashion is a team sport that we’re playing. We’re in it to be getting better, and we support and promote each other’s excellence."

Last week, our co-founder and CEO, Wen Zhou, received the highest honor - the Legacy Award - at the 2024 TAAF Awards Dinner. Wen was first introduced to the garment industry when she got an after-school job in a factory at the age of 13, just one year after arriving in the US. She would go on to start her own company selling fabrics to both major design houses and independent designers alike, at the age of 21. That was where she met Phillip Lim, then the young, LA based designer of another brand and they became fast friends. In 2004, at just 31, she encouraged Phillip to move to New York, and together, they started 3.1 Phillip Lim, debuting at New York Fashion Week in 2005 to immediate fanfare. Twenty years later, the brand has over a dozen global stores and distribution in 40 countries around the world. Over the last two decades, Wen has led 3.1 with love and respect to set a framework where creativity and sustainability can flourish. After surviving the pandemic, Wen led the brand into a new era with a triumphant return to the runway in September 2023 and global expansion. This year, the company will celebrate the huge milestone of 20 years. Thank you TAAF for honoring Wen with this award. Thank you Wen for being our constant role model and fearless leader - you are so deserving of this honor. Photo: JP Yim/Getty Images for TAAF

Our Algae Sequin dress is now on view in The Costume Institute’s “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” The Met Gala, on the First Monday in May, celebrated the opening of the exhibition. We partnered with designer and innovator Charlotte McCurdy (@ctmccurdy) and The Slow Factory (@theslowfactory) for their One X One programme, to create the dress derived from biodegradable materials such as bamboo and seaweed with inspiration from the ocean’s ecosystem. Together with McCurdy, we embarked on the challenge of reimagining sequins. McCurdy’s groundbreaking exploration into bio-plastics utilizes macroalgae sourced from the ocean. Through a process involving warm water, naturally-occurring fats, and time, the biopolymer’s structure adapts to the shape of the glass mold, resulting in radiant sequins. Algae stands out as one of Earth’s most efficient organisms in converting solar energy into stored chemical potential energy, without competing for resources essential for human sustenance. “Having our algae sequin dress in the Sleeping Beauties exhibition means a great deal to me on many levels. The dress was an experiment between Charlotte McCurdy and I to reimagine how we collaborate with our natural world. The sequins are made from algae and the inspiration is the ocean’s ecosystem. The dress is literally birthed by the ocean and is an example of the most direct and sustainable link to nature. On a personal level, to have my immigrant surname inducted into this revered American institution, is the best way to honor AANHPI Heritage Month.” – Phillip Lim We are honored to be a part of the “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which will be open to the public starting May 10th. #ReawakeningFashion @metmuseum@metcostumeinstitute Photos courtesy of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

We are thrilled to present CRAFTING SELFHOOD in celebration of AAPI Heritage Month and NYCxDesign Week. CRAFTING SELFHOOD On View at 3.1 Phillip Lim 48 Great Jones St – New York May 1 – 23 CRAFTING SELFHOOD celebrates thirteen female AAPI artists who integrate heritage, identity, and, oftentimes, sly humor in ceramics, textiles and sculptural objects. The exhibition is inspired by Phillip Lim’s reimagination of a cherished bracelet into a distinguishing hardware that embellishes a new family of leather bags known as the ID Collection. These artists demonstrate the elasticity of craft and its connection to building community.
