In the early 90s, a mysterious group of men with telescopes on tripods visited the rural village of Korzybie, Poland. They were sent to map every inch of the landscape, making camp among the town’s residents until completion. The spectacle moved Sylwia Jaszczak-Follehr to enroll at a newly opened, technical high school that specialized in land surveying. “I was taught that a practical education could open new doors for me,” she said. “After talking with some of those land surveyors, I felt like I found my calling and enrolled in vocational school.” Within five years, Sylwia graduated at the top of her class and immediately applied to the Warsaw University of Technology, the largest engineering school in Poland. She took several weeks to adjust to life in the capital but would excel. “Thanks to technical school, the first year was fairly easy; I helped other students a lot,” she said. “Three years into my engineering degree, I entered a master’s program in photogrammetry and cartography.” In 2005, Sylwia completed her education and accepted a job working with new technology, taking 3D measurements, and creating charts for Google Maps. To keep things interesting, she moved to Spain for seven years, performing survey activities for the construction of a new airport terminal. Her two children were born in Barcelona. Silwia immigrated to the U.S. in 2012. Today, she is an Atlas Party Chief with more than 25 years of land surveying experience who can speak five languages. She currently oversees quality control of field data for the L-200—a light rail extension project in Washington. She wants young women who aspire to build careers in land surveying to remember: “Be fearless. You can do it. Embrace adversity as a steppingstone to success, and let it fuel your determination to overcome barriers.” #Celebrating #NationalLandSurveyingWeek #LandSurveyors #LandSurveying

Back when the world stood still, Jackie Crumpler seized the opportunity to study land surveying. “Unfortunately, my office was impacted by the pandemic. But in the midst of uncertainty, there was one silver lining: the chance to attend community college tuition-free,” she said. As Party Chief, Jackie coordinates field operations. This encompasses leading a team of surveyors, setting up equipment, collecting data, and interpreting survey results. “I try to bring a positive, motivated attitude to every job I’m on.” she said. “If land surveying is what you want to do, don’t let anything hold you back!” #Celebrating #NationalLandSurveyingWeek #LandSurveyors #LandSurveying

Two years after graduating from Central Washington University, Josh Taylor, PLS, found work in construction as an entry-level surveyor, unaware of what the job fully entailed. A month later, it was clear that Josh had made the right decision. “Like many in our profession, I had no idea what land surveying was. But the variation of work kept me engaged and in a state of constant learning,” he said. “I was hooked within 30 days.” One of Josh’s most memorable challenges came in May 2013, when Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) officials acted fast to replace a collapsed section of the I-5 Skagit River Bridge. Round-the-clock efforts were needed to install both temporary and permanent fixes in just 27 days. “The existing bridge piers weren’t square, and the expansion joints on each end of the replacement span were ¾ inches, leaving no room for error,” he said. “Between retrieving and reviewing decades-old boundary records of the original corner parcel—to positioning a 165-foot-long bridge span under extremely small margins of tolerance—it was an intense project for everyone involved.” Today, Josh is the National Practice Team Manager of Survey Mapping & Geomatics. For anyone interested in pursuing a career in land surveying, he says to, “Reach out to anyone of us and you’ll find a passionate group of individuals eager to teach, learn about project sites that you would never think of seeing—and earn a living doing something that offers continual growth and opportunities.” Revisit the Skagit River Bridge Replacement project: https://loom.ly/TqMt4aY #NationalLandSurveyingWeek #LandSurveying #SurveyMapping #Geomatics #Transportation

If Julie Csisek, PLS never challenged the belief that to obtain a land surveying certification you must have land development experience, she would’ve never inspired others to follow in her footsteps and earn their own Professional Land Surveyors (PLS) license. “I was told that our work didn’t meet the criteria for licensing but took the LSIT (Land Surveyor in Training) on my own initiative and passed,” she said. “After a change in leadership, my new manager, Gary Gervelis, encouraged me to apply for the PLS program, assuring me that the State Board would tell me what areas I needed more experience in.” To Julie’s surprise, The Board accepted her application. She studied for months and became a licensed PLS in 2003. “I passed on the first try,” she said. “My journey sort of showed my colleagues—most of whom outranked me in seniority—that it’s possible. Within three years, four of them had obtained their licenses, completely transforming our office culture.” Eventually, Julie returned to Renton Technical College, where she received her associate’s in civil engineering technology/technician, to replace a retiring teacher. “As an intuitive introvert, it wasn’t easy for me to teach; the workload was never ending. But I improved every year and have had the opportunity to help several students go on to achieve licensure,” she said. “Eight years later, I was laid off for low enrollment, and returned to construction surveying.” Today, Julie is a Survey Technician who’s been with the Land Surveyors' Association of Washington for more than 32 years. She finds construction staking to be more interesting because it allows her to stretch her legs, be a part of a team, and see results daily. “My worksites have varied from remote transmission lines to city undergrounds, dam spillways to sewer manholes, and busy arterials to steep brushy ravines,” she said. “I am currently doing more highway work and have recently tackled bridges, different kinds of walls, and learned all about freeway barriers.” Every day in the field offers her a new challenge and reward. She accredits her success in the industry to mentors who always, “Placed talent and work ethic before gender, age, or ethnicity.” “Gary, the same manager who pushed me towards licensure, went out of his way to open doors for me, pulling me into industry leadership,” she said. “He later nominated me as our chapter president and coordinated with his colleagues across the state to elect two other females as chapter presidents that very year.” As an introvert, Julie believed that land surveying suited her quiet lifestyle, allowing her to enjoy the rigor of math and mapping while on the job. “Mentorship, however, brought me out of my shell and introduced me to a full-fledged career,” she said. “The fact that I’m now in a position to give back is an honor.” #WICWeek #WomenInConstruction #LandSurveying #STEM #DEI #AEC

Surveyors have used science, math, and tools to map the world around for us for thousands of years. They positioned the Great Pyramid of Giza to point in all cardinal directions and supervised the construction of intricate road networks to expand the Roman Empire. Today, technological advancements have allowed surveyors to further enhance their precision and efficiency. With the advent of satellite imagery, LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology, and advanced geospatial software, surveyors can create highly detailed and accurate maps of terrain, infrastructure, and natural resources. These tools enable them to conduct surveys remotely, reducing the need for extensive fieldwork and minimizing environmental impact. Additionally, real-time data processing capabilities empower surveyors to provide timely insights for decision-making in various sectors, including urban planning, agriculture, transportation, and resource management. Please join Atlas in honoring the men and women revolutionizing the way we perceive, analyze, and interact with the world around us. Happy National Surveyors Week! #NationalSurveyorsWeek #Surveyors #AEC

In the summer of 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. addressed the nation from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to deliver his seminal “I Have a Dream” speech. The Atlanta-born reverend devoted his life to upending racial injustice, encouraging millions to join the fight for equality and embrace a more compassionate world where understanding triumphs over division. Today, MLK’s legacy continues to serve as a vivid symbol of hope.
