You're working remotely on a data governance project. What tools do you need to succeed?

I regularly do mentoring and work with companies remotely. But it is always necessary to have at least one face-to-face session to communicate the project at an early stage.

Communication is a key part of any project. As such channels for communication within the project team must be available and open at any point. I’ve used a couple of tools to achieve this. Asana Slack Trello They all worked just fine. These tools not only aid information dissemination they also provide a smart way for stakeholders to get updates at short notice

If you ask about the Tools or Software you need to succeed in the Data Governance Project, you need the same tools for another project. VPN Software: A VPN service ensures secure access to organizational resources and data while working remotely, encrypting internet traffic, and protecting sensitive information from potential threats. Communication & Collaboration: Platforms such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, ClickUp, or Discord facilitate real-time communication, and collab among team members. Project Management: Asana, Trello, or Jira helps in organizing tasks, setting deadlines, and tracking progress. and many more, if there is a small-scope project i suggest you to choose Free Apps instead of premium ones.

Leverage video conferencing (Zoom, Teams) and instant messaging (Slack, Teams) for real-time interaction, updates, and problem-solving. Utilize secure email platforms (Gmail) for reliable communication and centralized documentation.

Nowadays with the Google suite and with tools like Slack or even better with Jira it is quite simple. There always has to be someone acting as scrum master.

Collaboration is also a key part of the Project management process. As a PM ensuring that channels for collaboration are maintained help with the timely delivery of the project. In my experience I’ve used tools like Jira, Trello, Asana.

Government is a strict commitment to procedures and people. It is necessary to have a complete tracking of everything. Everything is focused on metadata.

The DAMA Framework is a good reference model but experience is important. It is necessary to train the people who will act within the Data Governance process.

It is sincerely necessary to have a tool that can enrich the metadata, process tracking, data quality and data trends. It is necessary that the tool can define roles and policies. But the tool is the last thing, there are many more important things to define first.

Definitely a DG Tool is a must have: all the projects that started without a Tool and used Office Tools failed. But the DG tools needs to cover all Business Requirements not focus only to IT Requirements: have a Technical Data Catalog is NOT meaning to Have Data Governance for Business

Zoom, Whiteboard, colorful markers, post-its, a data governance catalog, access to current corportate data policy system, Teams like tool for collaboration, info sharing, channels by Domain, KanBan or Excel for intake prioritization, Sharepoint or website to share success stories, testimonial and spread excitement. And you need a good coffee maker. 😁

Most Data Governance tools out there offer data catalogue, Data Quality Management, Policy Management. However, In my experience I believe a thorough assessment of the needs of the organisation, compatibility with existing structure, scalability will inform you on the right tool to use. One can use tools specifically developed for data governance or adopt some other tools to also deliver on this.
