The way I have always reached out with my students is through humour and fostering an environment where they feel they can ask and be free. It's important to me as a Lecturer to know that even other students I have never taught DM me and ask for my assitance and advice because my students have intimated to them that I care and will help if possible. Empathy is the bridge to seeing each other's humanity:once that happens then walls are broken down and building can start.

I work with really young kids, like 3 or 4 years old. I treat them just like I treat my own son. I try to be a parent to them when they need it, and I really care about them. Of course, there are some downsides. I get attached to them, and they get attached to me. It's always hard to say goodbye at the end of the year. But the results I get in my classroom are way better than some of the other teachers who are all strict and professional.
