Remember the people on the other side of the table are human. They have some problem they are hoping you can help them with. They maybe need to learn a skill you have that they don't have. Maybe they need something finished quicker than they can do with their current people. Maybe their supervisors told them to go hire an "expert". It's important to connect with people on that level. That's where empathy comes in. A consultant is ultimately a service provider. So be of service and have human conversations. If you don't get the job, it's ok. Use every opportunity to have honest, helpful conversations with people. Listen attentively to what they say and don't think "how can I get this job", rather ask yourself "how can I serve them?"
