You’re a mid-career professional thinking about entrepreneurship. What are the challenges you should expect?

The biggest challenge I have seen is is sticking to the plan as a young entrepreneur. The short term cash flow challenges often makes startups to start trying to be everything to everyone which means you’re no longer focusing on your market segment where your products or services are better suited. The tactical discipline to stay focussed to your plan and your customers. Have a strong financial planning to back your plan up at least for six months before you break even. Delays are very common in business and therefore don’t be thrown out by temporary delays. Is also important to that eight of ten of every startups fail. Knowing this upfront will better prepare you to work much harder to ensure success.

Embarking on entrepreneurship mid-career means facing regressions for progression. You'll handle tasks beneath your level, lose steady paychecks, and miss the camaraderie of a large team. The challenge isn't just these hurdles; it's whether the potential benefits outweigh them. Is the autonomy, fulfillment from pursuing your passion, and the impact you could make enough to offset the comforts you'll lose? It's crucial to assess if the cost of not chasing your dream outweighs the security of the status quo. This journey is about personal truths, not universal answers. Do the rewards justify the sacrifices for you? Reflecting on this can clarify if the entrepreneurial path aligns with your aspirations and values.

Just finding a problem to solve is not the same as having a personal, existentially felt mission to bring change to the world. Infact those questions shouldn't be answered by you alone but also by your family, close friend and someone who doesn't bite their tongue with the truth. 1. Ask if you are truly ready for this. In your mid-career chances are your motivations have shifted to other things. Entrepreneurship requires lots of energy and time amidst the good, bad and ugly. 2. How about sacrifices, do you have savings, other income streams, what if this fails. Some people argue against having a plan B. I would say have a C to Z. Design what works for you. 3. What podcasts should I listen to, which coffee talks should I have and with who, how do I build a team?

Outline your startup costs, operating expenses, projected revenue, and cash flow projections to gain a clear understanding of your financial requirements and potential challenges. Incorporate contingency measures and risk mitigation strategies to address unforeseen expenses or fluctuations in income.

But despite the remote working situation we have going on, there's a simple philosophy I live by: take care of your people and they'll take care of you. You need to find people who align with your vision and embody your way of work. This is the make or break of teams. Then discover what makes them tick, what they aspire to become and how to get them further in their own career. They need to be aspirational to grow alongside you as an entrepreneur. Make sure they are learners, experimenters and an openness to failure. All crucial things for entrepreneurs.

"solutions" is the keyword here. Your competitors are not the ones who sell the same product/service, but the ones who solve the same problem as you do. In this sense, a video-game company competes with a streaming business. Or an online training competes with YouTube videos. It's about the problems one solve (customer's perspective), not the product (company's perspective) itself. As Teece (2010) said, customers don't care about your product, they care about their problems. So instead of focusing on competition, focus on offering the best Value (solution) for your customers.

Love your competitors and try to find your neiche. If you are successful everybody will try to copy you, but consider how you might keep on step ahead, that be from training, mentorship, your trusted colleagues or knowing your market well. Have a plan, ensure its measurable and enjoy the journey

Facing competition as an entrepreneur is inevitable, but it presents opportunities for growth and innovation. A distinction between competition and competitveness is of value. Competitiveness is simply offering the best value (solution) to customers and a company's appropriate perspective (decision on what constitutes value) on customers' perspectives supports the creation of products that delivers customer focused (valued) solutions.

Changing the status quo depends on courage. That´s the first challenge you must face to. Entrepreneurship is like a dark room, you will never know what is inside until you are in. another challenge is to create an exit strategy in case it went wrong. Others such as building a team will come when you start it.

Before embarking on this journey, ensure that you have taken certain precautions: 1. Have sufficient savings to cover at least one year of expenses, including rent, children's tuition, and other essential costs. 2. Be prepared for the possibility of initial failures and develop the resilience needed to bounce back from setbacks. 3. Seek out a financial partner who can either invest in your business as a silent investor or actively participate as a business partner. 4. Build a team of 3 to 4 trusted members who excel in areas where you may lack expertise, ensuring a well-rounded and capable team.

When I came across this topic I thought, "What do we mean by 'mid-career'? I actually believe starting a business mid-career, meaning you're older, wiser, you have significant experience working for several companies, is to your advantage. We LOVE to glorify young entrepreneurs, but truthfully, more seasoned professionals are more successful at starting businesses later in life. No matter when you start a business, you have to consider the same things; what type of business, what's your MVP, do you have sufficient finances to start it, will you be able to cover your expenses for a year, etc? As for the challenges, well, you're older, you might have kids, you might have to risk more to achieve success, but it can still be worth it.

I would suggest reframing it like this: "Discovering your true north in entrepreneurship involves understanding the core reasons driving your transition. This includes defining the value you aim to bring, the mission you intend to fulfill, and ultimately, the purpose behind your pursuit. Once these fundamentals are clear, execution becomes paramount. This entails identifying your niche, pinpointing the specific problem you aim to solve for your target audience, devising strategies, gathering necessary resources, embarking on a journey of continual learning and growth, and crucially, selecting the right people to accompany you on this entrepreneurial voyage. Your business journey is shaped by the individuals you choose to embark on it with."

There’s often a ‘gap’ when you leave a senior role in a well known company to start something new. Invitations to speak on stage dry up, your business card no longer opens doors, even if you are the same person and are adding more experience. It’s quite common and you should be mentally ready and have the right professional network to support you through.

Entrepreneurship is not something you take a sabbatical to do. It is a career path, just like being a doctor, lawyer, or engineer. It requires tangible skills, networks, relationships, and experiences. That means you are likely to fail at first, and maybe again and again. Just because you have a great idea doesn't mean you have a great business. Just because you worked for a company doesn't mean you know how to build one. These skills can certainly be learned and don't require a formal education to acquire. But they do require time in the saddle to be good. So rather than thinking about trying entrepreneurship, think about whether you want to change careers and become one. And after a few tries, if all goes well, you might be successful.
