You’re in a job interview and the interviewer asks, “What are your weaknesses?

When discussing weaknesses in an interview, better to mention the tendency to be overly critical of the work. However, suggest highlighting the proactive approach to improvement, which involves seeking feedback and maintaining a focus on continuous learning and development.

When asked about weakness in a job interview, I believe it is always worth to balance the answer between turning into the positives of the professional skills and the highlight of how I have learnt from a weakness or worked on that to improve it or monitor.

In a job interview, when confronted with the question about weaknesses, it's an opportunity to showcase self-awareness and growth. Rather than highlighting a fundamental flaw, I acknowledge a specific area for improvement and emphasize my proactive approach to addressing it. For instance, I sometimes get overly focused on details, but I've improved my ability to see the bigger picture without compromising precision. This demonstrates a commitment to personal development and a willingness to adapt and improve, which many employers value in a potential candidate.

Keep it simple and acknowledge atleast one of your weakness! We are humans and not machines! Your other strengths would get u the job!

Nowadays every company cares about the development of its product, service, and business. Therefore, it is important to have managers who have excellent communication and project management skills, but it is even more important to have managers who have had horizontal experience in product development. These managers must know well the product and its features, the customer requirements, the competitors, the product development process (concept, design, testing, manufacturing, usage), and the enabling technologies. This knowledge combined with leadership and communication skills facilitates the effective management of agile teams. This is especially true if the product is very complex like a car or airplane.

I'm not a fan of this interview question because, in many ways, it's a trick question that is very difficult for most people to answer well. If you're asked this question, pause and think carefully before you answer. Try to avoid choosing a positive trait and selling it as a "weakness" or going along with a formulaic response. I would ask the interviewer to elaborate on the question and use it as an opportunity to engage with them on a more intimate/less formal level. Keep in mind, regardless of the question, interviews are more about character, personality, and fit with the company's culture than the qualifications, which your resume satisfied and got you a callback for an interview.

I had an interview with a candidate once, and asked this exact question. His reply was "kryptonite". He did not get the job, nevertheless the best answer I came across 😀. The standard responses are: I'm a perfectionist, I bite on more responsibility than I can chew, I'm a multi-tasker, I'm a mono-tasker, I'm extremely honest, I'm an innovator, etc. The candidate knows it's an opportunity to sell his own brand, and uses / abuses this. The question is formulated wrong, it should be: What's your last mistake?

I have had this question many times and everytime I answer the same; I don't have weaknesses, only areas for improvement. I always look at life as opportunities to improve and believe human beings are born with lots of gifts and talents. Weaknesses assumes that one is measured from someone's perspective that one should be strong in something. In the real world one is either excellent or poor at something, but measured against a targeted criteria or goal. In the pursuit of excellence, ones drive, determination and will to succeed will compel you to accept the criticism and call these areas of improvement.

I've encountered this question numerous times, and my response remains consistent: I don't view weaknesses, only areas for growth. I perceive life as a series of opportunities for improvement, recognizing the abundance of gifts and talents inherent in every individual. My father instilled in me the belief that learning is a lifelong journey; even so, one may pass away still with much that has not been learnt.

I always try to work on myself things that were my weaknesses 5 years ago were such and such and today I’m better by this much and how I improve and currently I’m working on list one or 2 weaknesses and how you are working on them and what action steps you been taking . The idea is so show you have a growth mindset and that you are always trying to improve

Use the STAR method: STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result. - Situation: Briefly describe a specific situation where your weakness came up. - Task: Explain what your specific role or responsibility was in that situation. - Action: Detail the steps you took to address your weakness in that situation. - Result: Share the positive outcome of your actions, even if it was a learning experience.

I tend to take up more tasks than I should and say yes to the ones I shouldn’t have agreed. However as I spend more time in planning it becomes clear that I should deprioritise some of them. The other area is about the balance between trust and audit. Still learning…

Strengths and weaknesses, I've always found to be a poor question from interviewers because the question itself needs context as well as the answer. For example my weakness would be driving if I was interviewing for an F1 driving job but would be a strength if interviewing for a taxi job.

In my experience, i feel I have noticed that I tend to be overly detail oriented many at times, which can sometimes slow down my pace of work. However, I've been actively working on finding a balance between thoroughness and efficiency, and I've implemented strategies such as time management techniques and prioritization methods to help mitigate this tendency.

Prove that you know how to manage weaknesses: how you addressed them in the past, how you'll address in the future. Because weaknesses, while mostly fully addressed in a mature, structured professional, still keep surfacing in specific conditions. Like personality traits weaknesses emerge during stressful moments in- or out-side the work environment: how do you make yourself aware of the stress level? How do you perform check-in with your team mates? How you ask for help/support to overcome the temporary surge of the weakness?

Read carefully through the job description and learn as much as I can about what the company is up to and what the culture is like. I am honest about my abilities and What I can do.

Keep in mind that strengths in and of themselves provide no direct business results. Your ability to turn those strengths into results is what you are being hired for. Perhaps highlight your history of delivering results. Wise managers know passed results are the best indicator of future success.

Here’s what I say about mine, and you can take it or leave it. “I’ve been told that I have, what others call, ‘unbridled enthusiasm’ when I’m talking about an exciting solution. This enthusiasm sometimes leads me to get into technical depths with leaders and peers, who may not be interested or as excited about the technical how’s of the solution as I am. On a positive note, that same enthusiasm that can cause issues with peers, is something that I leverage when talking to technical teams about the solution, asking for their perspective, and asking them to ‘Swiss-Cheese’ it for me.” This approach is honest and highlights one of my biggest strengths and how in some circumstances, it’s a big weakness. 750 characters is hard on this lol

Weakness with a positive spin... This approach highlights a weakness but emphasizes how you're actively improving it. Here's an example: "I can sometimes be a bit detail-oriented, which can lead to taking longer to complete tasks. However, I've been working on improving my time management skills by using priority lists and setting realistic deadlines. In my last project, this helped me deliver high-quality work while staying on schedule."

Interviewers (including me) ask this question all the time and almost never get responses that stand out. Consider getting their attention by opening with: "My biggest weakness used to be that I was a bit too conceited, but I've since improved upon that and now I'm perfect." Once the laughter dies down, move on to your actual response. Consider stating what you believe a former boss or coworker would say are your areas in need of improvement. Explain the reasons why you agree and what you are doing to improve. If you can be honest and demonstrate a real capacity for introspection, then your responses will stand out.

Maintain a positive tone and confidence in your ability to improve. "I am confident in my professional journey and continuously seek out feedback to enhance my skills. My proactive approach to personal development ensures that I turn any weakness into a learning opportunity, thereby growing both professionally and personally."

Nobody is perfect, this is why a team brings together complementary skills and experience to produce a whole that is greater than the individuals. At lower levels, some gaps can improve with training and experience, others cannot - we cannot become talented, either we are or we are not. At higher levels, we might as well face reality and be honest about what we can do strongly, where we will struggle to contribute, and whether there is enough breadth in the team to cover those aspects.

One of the best ways to reduce stress and boost my confidence is to prepare well for the interview. The more I prepared, the more confident I will feel.

Asking a promising candidate about weaknesses is like asking a beauty contest participant "What is your ugliness?". It is a negative and such an intimate and case dependent question that even psychotherapists will spend hours before getting around the topic. And not with that wording. A better question closer to the initial intent would be: "Here is exactly what we want you to do, these are the constraints, so tell us where and when you may need the biggest amount of support to make things right and on time?" I would answer as if this was the question. Then maybe I would ask the interviewer about the team/company "weaknesses" and see what happens. Reciprocity has always been the only way to the Trust.

I think this is the question where one should portray the areas that can be improved upon . It should not be showcase in a way that the candidate gets inferiority complex but should portray an honest, humble aspects. These days corporates and leaders like candidates with such traits Having self awareness , good skills and a yearning to keep learning and improvising As they say " there is always a scope of improvement" 😃

I think it's the most unpleasant question in a job interview. However, there is no escaping this question, which has become a classic. The most strategic way to answer this question is to give an answer that supports a positive situation for a recruiter while actually talking about a weakness. For example: "Sometimes I find it difficult to balance work and private life because work always comes first for me". The disturbing thing about this question is that most people, in order not to jeopardise the interview, do not say if they really have a weakness, but give an answer that is appropriate to the situation and often not correct.

Whatever you do, don't humblebrag by listing weaknesses like "perfectionist" or "workaholic." Show that you recognize your blind spots and take actions to mitigate them.

This is a simple answer, My weakness is I love to work, it hurts my personal life but working and completing tasks are very gratifying. Telling an potential employer you have a real weakness like handwriting, don't get along with others or bad at math will cost you the job. Your faults are yours to own and improve.
