Your team is stuck in a rut. How can you get them thinking creatively?

When the team is in same schedule and same setting, creativity will keep on decreasing. As a servant leader, manager should focus on root cause analysis and introduce rewards and recognition to boost the creativity. There should also be no fear of failure. Changing the setting of the meeting, allowing everyone to share their ideas will work wonders. Creative solutions like De Bono’s six thinking hats and reverse brainstorming are some of the techniques which can get the creative spark back in the team.

An open environment needs to be there where the team members feel comfortable sharing their ideas without the fear of negative criticism. Not only the final idea which is accepted should be applauded, but also all those who have contributed ideas deserve an appreciation. The team can regularly be asked if you were at liberty to do this in a different way, how would you go about doing this, which can encourage them to think out of the box

Encourage team to feel confident in sharing all ideas coming in the mind without fear of failure and provide an environment where people are happy to hold hands and take risk together.

A team may get into Rut for numerous causes . Lack of a common purpose , clear direction , recognition for individual efforts and lack motivation to learn and grow are some of the causes that lead a team into a rut. Certainly! To break your team's creative stagnation, you must initiate a shift in their approach to problem solving. Begin by establishing brainstorming sessions in which everyone feels free to express their thoughts without fear of being judged. Create an open and inclusive workplace that honors varied viewpoints and promotes collaboration. Introduce unique cues or challenges to push the team beyond their comfort zones. These can act as accelerators for innovative thinking by challenging traditional cognitive processes. Basically drawing up the entire process map on the drawing board and identifying opportunity and misses in the process. The R&D efforts of team members should be facilitated and supported, as they may lead to the discovery of new revenue streams for the organization. "Promote Diversity" is the tested strategy to get team thinking creatively. One need to have mixed backgrounds, experiences and skills member in the team. Diversity brings creativity and exposes each team member for thinking, seeing, and doing things differently. Ultimately it is guaranteed that team cannot stuck in a rut.

One thing I have found helpful to those who are stuck in Rut . In fact , in a given domain many champions work but at times good one is not given opportunity . This means in that part domain either he may change the organisation or within the organisation look forward to upgrade his skills at other related domains. This cross - functional domains may result in uplifting his skills and abilities further .

Teams need to be motivated in a 'supportive Management way' to make and take decissions even if they are connected to dedicated risks which are natural and always given. Even is a risk turns out into an issue because of less or uneffective Actions are taken, teams may not be punished for it. Waiting With a decission until time is over and decission is taken itself is not an Option at all..

Good judgement comes from bad decisions. Bad decision comes from autonomy. Allow team members to take individual decisions specially for tasks that won’t cause a dent in P&L statement.

It is very important for the team lead to find the root cause for the productivity issue in the team. Fixing the root cause can fix the whole problem. The productivity does not go high just because of encouragement and support, it goes high when we understand the root cause of the rut and find the best ways to fix it. The best thing a team lead can do is to maintain the same attitude with team members to fix the root cause, make them feel better and bring 10× productivity to the project and self.
