Going back a few years, we decided to internally promote two senior employees to the management team to gain more operations representation. Distracted by day-to-day issues they would fail to express upcoming issues in planning meetings. This created a reactive "urgent issue" problem. The urgent matters took energy and resources away from planned objectives, strained set budgets and created competing priorities. We spent time training these employees, but in the end restructured and hired one stronger, more experienced manager to represent operations. Having someone that could objectively see future needs, collaborate and discuss prioritize with the rest of the team was a game changer.

If you have team members that come to you as their first line of defense for problem-solving and trouble-shootung, take the opportunity (when you can) to redirect them to a peer or fellow team member. Sometimes less direct action by you facilitates better teamwork all round, leading to a team that learns to rely on one another as much as they do you.

I can not emphasis the need to share the corporate vision enough. I have had the opportunity to work in a number of organizations, the more transparent the better. In one company, we shared the vision, involved key managers on refining that vision and had great buy-in thorough-out the company. But.. the key was that we talked about the vision, core values to start weekly department meetings. In contrast, at another company the owners were suspicious of entrusting their vision with managers (it wasn't inclusive). The lack of unifying vision, or clear storyline created fear and distrust. There ended up being little corporate culture, or unifying goals, just task lists. As an outsider, the fear of transparency was visible from top to bottom.
