Having someone to keep you accountable and challenge your thought process is a great way to get to the next level. Depending on your job, you will have many resources and many people to support you, however, a coach is an independent part that can make a difference.

I reflect regularly, asking myself these questions: 1. What did I enjoy doing? 2. What could have been better? 3. What could I do differently that would yield better results? Being honest with yourself during the reflection is very important! Also, peer feedback, coaching, and mentoring help.

Louder for people in the back: "A coach is not a mentor, a trainer, or a consultant. A coach is a partner who supports you, challenges you, and helps you discover your own solutions." Come to each session with your own issue to discuss, be ready to have your assumptions challenged, and, if your coach is any good, there will be times when you're going to feel like you want to fire them. Because you need an honest partner is this space if you want to grow. As I tell clients..."you will always be safe. BUT...you will often be uncomfortable."

One of the unexpected benefits of the many coaches (and mentors) I have had is building a leadership framework, or repeatable approach. While each person and situation is different, having a toolkit, or coaching framework, to refer to has been helpful. Some of the concepts that have been valuable for me to lean on with my coach, or people I am coaching, include a Team Charter, SMART Goals, Situational Leadership, DISC, Coaching for Performance, and Radical Candor. Referring to these tools really helps increase self-awareness, better communication, and certainly decision making.

Many of the things listed here are helpful but not the central benefit of leadership development coaching. Two core benefits are (1) the elimination of silos to your world view and hence removing bias and (2) organizing of your thoughts so that you know how to think in a more effective manner that improves your mind space for self-awareness, communication, decision-making, etc.

One thing I know my clients particularly value is the time that our sessions provides for them to slow down from the thrum of the busy work day and switch from doing to thinking.

Perhaps most importantly, a leadership development coach needs to be blunt — someone who will set boundaries, challenge you, and push back when necessary.

When choosing a leadership coach, ask for a sample session. During the session pay attention to how you feel and the kind of energy exchanged between you and the coach. For coaching to work deeply there must be trust and transparency between the coach and the leader.

Engage multiple coaches over your leadership journey. Different coaches bring different essences, expertise and experience. So finding fit is partially about chemistry and fit, it is also about relevance and timing. Who and what will be most helpful on your journey. You don't have to have full clarity on that, but use coaching consultation calls to help you get clarity - great coaches will help you with that because they want an ideal fit too.

In my experience, leaders need a dedicated space where they can be brave to share what they think stand in the way of more success or less self-doubt. Coaching offers this container to shine the light on what's working, what is no longer working, what needs to change and what needs leveraging and scaling. It is the art of feeling heard and understood, the art of powerful questions and reflections, and the art of co-creating a new way of being.

While this varies from culture to culture (both in terms of organisation and countries) Leaders often don’t get the mirrors held up to their faces. A great leadership coach with facilitate that process of holding up a mirror for the leader enabling a degree of self challenge in a safe space.

Have an idea of what you’d like to accomplish in your overall coaching engagement, as well as each individual session. In my experience, one of the first questions I ask is why are you doing this and how do you see your role in maximizing this investment. I want the coachee to think about the ramifications of starting a coaching program and the work they will need to do to get the most from it. I tell them up front, I don't have the answers. My job is to "mine" the answers of them and hold them accountable for their efforts. Once we are both clear and in agreement on this, then and only then can we move forward.

A masterful, powerful coach will have you dive deeper within yourself to explore your thinking, feeling, and action patterns and how it’s impacting your leadership. The foundation of a great leader is the ability to lead yourself well. In order to be ready for transformational leadership coaching, you must be ready, able, and willing to identify the biggest changes you need to make in yourself to become a better leader as well as developing more courage to implement it.

If you are serious about becoming a better leader, leadership coaching is vital. It is very difficult to achieve greatness in sports without a great coach. It is similarly difficult to achieve greatness as a leader with out a great coach.

In my experience, if you want someone authentic, unbiased and honest by your side, go for coaching. If you have never learned or trained on leadership, definitely go for leadership coaching. It doesn't matter if you are leading people or not, still go for leadership coaching, it's reall effective if you got the right coach.

To elevate your leadership skills, engage in self-assessment and seek diverse feedback. Develop the skillset around Ground Intelligence and Common Sense and let the feedbacks pass through the filters of space, time and context, to make those most relevant. Embrace continuous learning through books, workshops, and mentorship. Apply new skills in real-world situations and enhance emotional intelligence. Set clear goals aligned to the purpose, challenge yourself with new responsibilities, and regularly reflect on your experiences. Invest in team development and prioritise your personal well-being. Integrating these strategies with leadership development coaching creates a well-rounded approach to advancing your leadership journey.

So, what else should you consider beyond the coaching you have received if you are to develop as a leader? Well, don't overlook the obvious! You must push yourself into situations where you are forced to exercise leadership traits. In short, go do it - put into practice what you are hearing from your coach. One really effective way to make that happen is by taking on short-term assignments. It's especially helpful if those interim posts are pushing you to develop a skill set that you're currently lacking.

As a leader there are always new things to learn and new ways to lead your team. Which is why a leadership coach can be a huge value add to your leadership style and tactics. But, there are also plenty of other ways to improve and learn new things. I've found some GREAT podcast episodes, articles and books that have helped me grow as a leader.
