What are some ways to promote sustainability within your transportation management team?
Transportation management is the process of planning, executing, and optimizing the movement of goods and people from one point to another. It involves various activities such as selecting the best mode and carrier, routing and scheduling, tracking and tracing, and managing costs and performance. Transportation management also has a significant impact on the environment, society, and economy, as it affects the emissions, energy consumption, congestion, safety, and accessibility of transportation systems. Therefore, transportation managers have a responsibility to promote sustainability within their teams and operations, which can benefit not only their own organization, but also their customers, stakeholders, and communities. In this article, we will discuss some ways to promote sustainability within your transportation management team, such as setting clear goals and metrics, adopting green practices and technologies, engaging with suppliers and partners, educating and motivating your staff, and reporting and communicating your results.
One of the first steps to promote sustainability within your transportation management team is to set clear goals and metrics that align with your organization's vision and values. You need to define what sustainability means for your transportation operations, and how you will measure and monitor your progress and performance. For example, you can use key performance indicators (KPIs) such as carbon footprint, fuel efficiency, waste reduction, or customer satisfaction to track and evaluate your sustainability efforts. You can also benchmark your goals and metrics against industry standards, best practices, or regulatory requirements to ensure that you are meeting or exceeding your expectations.

The team, especially those engaged in transportation function will only respond to a consistent and well-elaborated strategy around sustainable practices. So setting up a clear strategy, with a well-defined purpose and goals is the first step towards creating an environment where sustainability is at the top of the mind when taking any transportation-related decision. Some key metrics can be route consolidation, vehicle capacity optimization, route optimization, vehicle fitness, avoiding idle time slots, route congestion, and many more such factors that the transportation team should have as performance metrics.
-
Sustainability within a transportation management team involves adopting strategies and practices that reduce environmental impact, improve efficiency, and contribute positively to the communities served and more over approaches to be consider below strategies. Optimize Routing and Load Planning, Fleet management, Alternative Modes of Transportation, Sustainability Policies and Goals, Share best practices, Waste management, Community and stakeholder engagement and Transparency. These strategies require a committed effort from the entire transportation management team and the support of the wider organization.

Setting clear and smart goals is key to establishing sustainability in the supply chain. Maintaining transparency and clarifying sustainable objectives with clients and suppliers is imperative and important. Promoting Collaboration and partnership between parties involved. Consider collaborating with customers, competitors, industry associations, and government agencies related. Sharing best practices and knowledge can promote progress.
-
Establish clear sustainability objectives for your transportation operations, such as cutting back on waste, using more renewable energy sources, or lowering carbon emissions. To monitor your progress toward these objectives, set quantifiable measures like waste reduction targets, CO2 emissions per mile, or fuel economy.
-
1 If you put a (internal) cost on the carbon footprint and measure the total cost when deciding a route or a mode of transport, it will remind people the importance of sustainability. 2 you can request your suppliers (hauliers for example) to follow their effort towards sustainability with tracked KPIs. 3 you can have a company KPI linking sustainability efforts and global bonus for everybody. 4 benchmark yourself versus the best in terms of sustainable transport.
Another way to promote sustainability within your transportation management team is to adopt green practices and technologies that can help you reduce your environmental impact, improve your operational efficiency, and save costs. For example, you can implement practices such as optimizing your routes and loads, reducing your idle time and speed, using alternative fuels or renewable energy sources, or recycling or reusing your packaging materials. You can also leverage technologies such as transportation management systems (TMS), GPS tracking, smart sensors, or artificial intelligence (AI) to automate and optimize your transportation processes, enhance your visibility and control, and enable data-driven decision making.

It's becoming less of a "nice to have" and more of a "must have". Mandatory pressures on Scope 3 emissions reporting are growing (and about time too!). It does not require a huge capital investment to make a decent dent in your emissions - taking more time to plan your operations, getting closer to those partners (customers and suppliers) who share a common goal to authentically tackle their emissions. To really move the needle takes a little more investment of time and capital - e.g. invest in digital capability to automate the planning and execution, invest in bio-fuels (in tank or insetting). The tools to do it are there, investing now will deliver the returns multiple times over sooner than you think!
-
I would say after setting the goals next logical step would be to capture the data on existing emissions in a fairly automated and consistent way so we have good baseline data to work from here. Unfortunately nowadays at least in Asia most shippers don’t collect such data, ie they don’t do proper carbon accounting for scope 3 emissions. At best they can do some modeling based on offline data and consumption assumptions . Going forward I believe one of main drivers of TMS adoption will be CO2 emissions tracking and optimization , and so each TMS should enhance their capabilities to handle such data.

Integrate eco-friendly procedures and equipment into your transportation business. This could entail buying energy-efficient cars, utilizing eco-friendly packing materials, designing routes to minimize gasoline usage, and using alternative fuels like biodiesel or electric cars.
-
Implement eco-friendly practices like optimizing route planning to minimize fuel usage and emissions. Embrace technology solutions such as GPS tracking and vehicle telematics to monitor fuel efficiency and identify areas for improvement.
-
Collaborate with suppliers and customers to implement green supply chain practices such as reducing packaging waste, using recyclable materials, and sourcing locally whenever possible. Encourage suppliers to adopt sustainable transportation practices and reduce emissions throughout the supply chain.
A third way to promote sustainability within your transportation management team is to engage with your suppliers and partners who are involved in your transportation network, such as carriers, brokers, shippers, or third-party logistics (3PL) providers. You need to communicate your sustainability goals and expectations to them, and collaborate with them to find mutually beneficial solutions that can enhance your environmental, social, and economic performance. For example, you can select suppliers and partners who share your sustainability values and standards, negotiate contracts that include sustainability clauses or incentives, or join industry associations or initiatives that promote sustainability best practices or certifications.
-
Collaborate closely with your transportation and supplier partners to advance sustainability across the supply chain. Urge people to embrace environmentally friendly habits, such driving cars that use less gasoline, cutting back on packaging, or starting recycling initiatives. Think about forming alliances with suppliers who value ecologically friendly operations and are as committed to sustainability as you are.
-
Collaborate with transportation service providers and suppliers who prioritize sustainability. Work together to identify opportunities for reducing carbon footprint throughout the supply chain, such as using biofuels or investing in energy-efficient vehicles.
-
Communicate your sustainability goals and expectations to your partners and 3PL, collaborate with them in order to find mutually beneficial solutions that can enhance your environmental, social, and economic performance. For example, you can select suppliers and partners who share your sustainability values and standards, negotiate contracts that include sustainability clauses.
