What are some effective ways to promote CSR initiatives across generations?

Social Sensitivity at all level & in all stages of CSR interventions like sensitivity in need identifications/ prioritization/planning/ implementation/monitoring & evaluation/Feedback/exit etc...

An effective CSR initiative will 'meet people where they are,' with a broad engagement rubric allowing multiple points of entry for all ages to 'choose their own adventure' as it relates to participation. From the outset, factor in the generational differences related to economics, class, culture, education, gender, and geography, while understanding that "awareness" is a step in the right direction, even if it doesn't result in an immediate call to action. Consistency matters, and engagement is most effective when part of an authentic, values- and experience-based conversation that is accessible for all generations, gives key insights into an issue, and provides a culture of `ownership' to feel vested in successful outcomes.

Be truthfull, walk your talk . Invite your audience / citizens / end users to reflect on your values, and how these relate to their lives and visa versa

It is the corporates' role to guide people to new values as the Apple has done several times. Apple does not follow the people but make new examples for them to follow.

Using data + stories effectively makes a difference in helping understand impact and outcomes. It's just that the same content needs to be packaged differently for various types of content consumers across generations. Understanding the audiences and then showcasing not just the outcome, but even periodic progress can keep people engaged. Sometimes it's not even necessary to wait till there is an 'award' or a recognition; just the fact that there is consistent progress and work going on, builds interest and engagement, making the outcome much more credible and involved for everyone.

CSR is aligned to SDGs and ESGs. That makes CSR dynamic and based on emerging needs for sustained human development, industry/corporate's contribution synced to community, state and global policies & actions need to evolve. To sustain efforts across generations will mean commitment, impactful investment, sharing the stories of change, engage employees & team, respect core values towards change and above all be dynamic to change dynamics. This would require a flow of thoughts and action framework and engagement with team, internal and external stakeholders through diverse means to the commitment alive and delivery active. Also involving community, students, and stakeholders in the journey as a committed partners is essential.

In my experience the most effective and impactful initiatives are based on the focussing of life changing initiatives. An example is building a bridge for a community that has challenges accessing markets as they are cut off or children having easy access to school by using this bridge. The benefits to the community are sustainable and can be quantified to demonstrate impact.

One thing I have noticed in my 3 decades of CSR related work is a lack of clearly defined deliverables and tangible results. Planning for impact and measurable outcomes is essential for determining progress and for providing an accountability framework. Some form of third party certification can be very beneficial in providing clear impact and delivery of outcomes, such as ISO 14001 for environmental impact, or Forest Stewardship Council Certification for sustainability.

CSR is a subset of ESG and is not different from ESG. So, CSR funds can be used towards CSR aligned ESG activities. Remaining ESG activities can be completed from ESG funds. SDG is also a subset of ESG. Mostly, all SDG are covered in ESG which is re-grouping of SDG. BRSR, which is a SEBI mandated report on ESG performance, is mandatory for few companies and optional for all others. Yet, it is good to prepare and publish BRSR report for brand building and improving credibility.

First of all, choose very well yours influencers and advocates, be sure that they share the values and proposals of your company. The image and reputation of a company is the most important and expensive achieve and is what, investors and other stakeholders are watching out. Secondly, be closer of them, discuss how they can cooperate with the strategy, define how you will measure the results, establish a real partnership, provide them what to show and promote. Finally, remember that the CSR can pave the way to improve your relationship with your main stakeholders, specially clients and government. Concentrate your efforts being transparent and effective.

In my experience, work with no societal impact is worthless. People need impactful solutions, and since no meaningful legacy happens by accident, it must be built through empowering others to reach their full potential. La responsabilité sociétale des entreprises est tout d’abord une « culture d’entreprise ». In my experience one of the best way to engage people from today's generation in CSR initiatives is to give them the lead... That means listening to them, understanding their truth and passion in SDGs, then jointly coming up with a design that they can lead towards the desired outcomes.

Some old fashioned CSR initiatives often came across as patronising and tokenistic - especially when the focus appeared to be on 'helping' a cause or supporting a disadvantaged group. This often happened when the CSR initiative lacked a clear rationale, or did not appear to be linked to a company's purpose and vision . CSR initiatives have to have a clear rationale, especially if they wish to attract younger groups (especially GEN Z workers who are digital natives, and often have a clear idea of what they want their 'personal brand' is) . To attract most people across all age groups, the thing is to ensure their contributions are recognised and celebrated so they can see that the time they invest in these initiatives is valued.
