Being familiar with your students is one of the best strategies for inspiring them in a distance learning environment. You can adjust your approach to suit their specific requirements, interests, and learning styles, which will make the learning process more relevant and interesting. A more successful and motivated remote learning environment can be created by adding interactive aspects, personalizing content, and offering possibilities for collaboration.

Don't totally depend on subject matter experts (SMEs) to define what your learners need. Too often, SMEs don't know your audience and demonstrate their guidance to you on including everything they know about the subject when your audience may need just a fraction of the SME's overall knowledge of the subject to accomplish their work. Get to know your audience by talking with them, and don't forget to include their managers in the discussion. When managers set the expectation that their employees will learn A, B, and C, it provide motivation and support for your learning activities.

A handbook is an effective and unambigous tool to summarize and communicate all this. The more accurate it is, the more motivated learners will be.

In addition to goals and objectives, always start with a look at the big picture. At a high level, what does the learning experience look like, and how will things change when the learning is successfully completed? Give them the full Gestalt.

While e-learning offers flexibility, it also exposes us to distractions absent in a classroom setting, like a tempting shopping or sports browser tab. Thus, remote learning requires a balance of autonomy-promoting strategies and subtle interventions. Fun quizzes, for example, can effectively nudge learners to stay engaged and motivated.

You don’t. Motivation is intrinsic. One of the biggest mistakes/misunderstandings that leaders make is attempting to do that which is not within their power. The role of a great leader is to identify what it is that motivates the learner, and then inspire them to go beyond their boundaries of possibilities. Keep in mind, one size does not fit all.

It is so important to provide autonomy and choice in remote learning. Sure, it takes a bit of setup effort. But do not let that be a roadblock or you will be left behind. The way things have always been done, or the current process of selling these trainings is not going to work without choice. That's not me talking, that's adult learning principles 101.

Autonomy is a powerful motivator, and motivated learners are more likely to succeed. Providing flexibility to learners in managing their time is key. This requires a thoughtful approach to creating the journey around learners' profiles. A comprehensive understanding of learners' needs also enables the creation of content that can be accessed across various devices (laptops, tablets, and smartphones.) In group settings where collaboration is required, granting autonomy to groups regarding the frequency and platform for their meetings is crucial. While the LMS offers a platform for group work, allowing groups to meet and collaborate on a different platform demonstrates respect for their preferences and further enhances motivation.

As per my experience in executive education, peer review and group assignments were always productive. They break barriers between learners, while facilitating horizontal learning and knowledge sharing. Learning should always be a collective effort with a clear sense of belonging to a cohort that is learning together as a group. Technology offers multiple options. However, even the most advanced solutions are ineffective without a symbolic structure (i.e. a name for the cohort and/or for subgroups of learners, badges, etc.) Turning a sum of individuals into a group of learners with a sole mission drives engagement and generate ripple effects.

To build collaboration and a sense of community, I have used several methods: Assign group projects that require learners to work together to solve problems or complete tasks. Incorporate peer review activities where learners provide feedback on each other's work. This promotes critical thinking, communication skills, and a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Foster a sense of community by creating online forums or discussion boards where learners can connect with their peers, ask questions, and share resources and insights. Regular Check-Ins: Schedule regular check-ins or progress meetings to provide support, address any challenges, and keep learners motivated and on track with their collaborative projects.

Recently I built a Community Guest Book into one of my remote trainings. Participants are encouraged to add their names to a published Google Doc (where everyone can edit) to mark their presence and contribution. This simple design choice showcases that we are all lifelong learners and that we are part of building something better. It can feel lonely working and training in isolation. A virtual wall is the bare minimum for fostering collaboration and community.

Platforms makes it easy to arrange technically but educators can include stimulating opportunities for learners to connect through shared activities.

Gamification and rewards in this way are nonsense. One of the myths of T&D. It works in games because the person voluntarily wants to experience that game. However, for adult professional training, the result is different. Adding this to learning solutions without criteria is foolish. But of all these nonsensical ideas, the sense of progression is essential to motivate students. Progression means advancing, perceiving that there is development and that, if they continue learning, the result will be positive. This progress doesn't just mean visual cues on the progress interface but a solution designed for the student to feel that they are improving when they invest their interest, attention, and study in the course.

You need to tangibly incentivize your people to complete the training - especially when you have a large amount of either annual or bulk training. Incentives can be intrinsic or extrinsic, but they have to be valuable enough to the trainee to complete and complete well. Also, we can't have "click-through" training. It must be interactive and measurable and be tied to a business goal.

It takes effort to add human presence to remote learning. I compare it to when you are learning to write in college, and you fall into using passive voice exclusively because it sounds academic. When you are building remote learning, you don't have to be cold and distant! You do have to work at bringing your humanity. You do have to design space for participants to come as their authentic selves.

Your job does not end when the training is delivered. You need to follow up with the learners to ensure that they "got it" and that they are using their new knowledge and skills in their job roles. Too often, when people complete training and start to implement what they have learning, they run into a roadblock. "I thought I understood it, but now I can't make it work." "I've run into a problem that wasn't discussed in the training -- what do I do now?" One solution is what I call a "Virtual Follow-Up Session." I have an article on LinkedIn about this. The basic idea is to hold a virtual session several weeks after the training is completed to answer questions and ask for reinforcement.

I tell people to find energy in the process, not the endpoint goal. Find meaning and challenge in how you are developing and contributing more than the end point. Then, you sustain focus, are present in the here and now, and your motivation goes well beyond the goals you meet.

I recommend making digital as human as possible: for example : replace automatic communications with personal communications, add human comments to AI inputs, be active in forums, be present in discussion groups, etc. Include moments of 'human to human only' communication...
