What do you do if your senior Building Design professional is not meeting their key responsibilities?

Design stage is very important and critical for any project, hence everyone in the team shall do his best to get obtimum result. if the team leader noticed any team member falling short, he should go into direct/honest discussion with him to understand the actual root cause and then it would be easy to tackle/resolve it. Team leader is playing a very sensitive role that needs his expertise, wise and emotional stability to successfully lead his team. Also communications skills are very important to resolve such issues in addition to his well understanding of the nature and personality of his team members and accordingly the best way to discuss and resolve anything with them.

No one is perfect and our team members are perpetually learning. In instances where team members are not fulfilling their requirements, our first approach is to provide additional mentorship. Reasonable professionals will accept this and move forward as a learning process. If the process is rejected by the individual, we will move forward with replacement talent more capable of addressing the challenges.

Take them aside for a Frank conversation, measure performance and lean on the team to make up the slack. If this fails, find a new guy!

What I’ve seen over the years is that design professionals don’t tend (generally speaking) to respect blue collar opinions so it’s tough to massage your point in without them getting indignant and defensive. Document the heck out of the situation and gently prod to discuss until they’re willing to do so. Always lend your opinion as a “simple thought that may help”. Let them always be the hero. As long as you don’t steal their thunder, things should land right-side up.
