Teniendo esto presente, entre las diferentes definiciones de calidad, podemos tomar una muy sencilla: La calidad es cumplir con las especificaciones que nos solicitan. Por lo tanto, realizar un trabajo de calidad, va a estar íntimamente relacionado con la comprensión que tengamos de las expectativas y requerimientos de lo que nos solicita nuestro jefe. Si validamos esto al inicio, nos permitirá hacer una evaluación de los recursos materiales, nuestros conocimientos y tiempo para cumplir con esas especificaciones.

There’s an old saying in that goes something like, “Fast, good or cheap — pick two.” Known as the iron triangle, or triple constraint, this is familiar to anyone who has ever felt the pressure of weighing the opposing forces of quality, speed and cost. The concept is that you have three choices: make it quickly, cheaply or well. In many cases, management would like all three. The key is to focus on values and expected outcomes, and eliminating assumptions.

Approach the situation professionally and respectfully, focus on finding solutions/alternatives rather than placing blame. Often times, they are also put under some pressure from their bosses/clients. With multiple other things on their plate, they just forwarded the problem to you with the intention that you are the best person to find a solution! Perhaps, they were not trying to target/annoy you. So, please put yourself in their shoes as well and think about the situation so that you get broader perspective. Overall, while this does not sound like a good plan from their end, it is important not to start blaming. Because, the ultimate aim of your discussion is to make your boss realise the core issue, limitations, and alternatives if any.

One way of prioritising is to use the MoSCoW method or MoSCoW analysis, which is a popular prioritisation technique for managing requirements. The acronym MoSCoW represents four categories of initiatives: must-have, should-have, could-have, and won’t-have (some use “wish"). This will help prioritise outcomes that are most valuable to the business.

Many IT professionals become overwhelmed with an endless number of priority-killers like walkups for asks that, while may be important to the requestor, detracts from the priorities set by leadership or the team. Sometimes, even your manager may reach out asking for something, without realizing your current priority might be another effort they asked of you. Keeping your objectives clear with a list of what you're working on, and managing expectations on deliverables is the best long-term strategy. Break that list down to smaller achievable tasks, so that in your mind, you're progressing without the feeling that you need large commitments of time to accomplish your work, and stressed when you can't seem to find that large block of time.

La matriz de Eisenhower permite tener en el eje vertical la variable de importancia y en el eje horizontal la variable de la urgencia. De esta manera podemos obtener 4 cuadrantes. Las primeras tareas para ejecutar deberían ser las más importantes y más urgentes. Luego seguirían las demás hasta llegar a las menos importantes y menos urgentes. Para estas últimas se deberá evaluar si serán ejecutadas, tomando como premisa que no podremos cubrir todo el alcance del proyecto.

Cuando se trata de llevar un proyecto, la mayoría de las veces este requiere de la administración de varios tipos de recursos que te son asignados según un presupuesto o según estos estén disponibles. Por lo tanto, para que este sea viable, necesitas el apoyo y aprobación de otras áreas o personas dentro de la organización, por lo que, si los recursos que tienes asignados te resultan insuficientes, pide ayuda a quienes tienen el poder de incrementarlos o reasignarlos. Para lograr esto, estructura bien los argumentos que vas a plantear, respáldalos con cifras y hechos concretos, y exponlos con seguridad, mostrando los beneficios que se obtendrían al contar con más recursos y la ayuda de otros.

This is one of the steps in the process that many overlook. Discussing with your manager your workload isn't saying you can't prioritize yourself. It's providing your manager awareness, and enabling them to support you. Often, they can help protect your time so that you can focus on priority work. They have the ability to gently push back on perhaps even their own peers, or simply allow you a means to shuffle your workload to meet objectives without burning out attempting to address too much at once. More importantly, you're helping them understand turnaround time expectations for future work, so they can optimize resource assignment with reasonable timelines.
