What do you do if your boss in the airline management field is resistant to your ideas?

We are all born with a "I know it all" attitude - great attitude in small doses, lethal in large doses. I have been approached by colleagues with so many ideas - but they are just that - ideas. Ideas are for free, execution is key. I agree, one must assess ideas. So ask yourself first: 1. Do I completely understand the problem I am trying to solve? 2. Do I understand the implications of the solution I am proposing? 3. Is this a good-to-have or a need-to-have solution? Bulletproof ideas never get shot down. Weak and irrelevant ones do.

The most detrimental action one can take is to resist resistance itself. It's crucial to recognize that we're all on the same team. If the boss is opposed to an idea, there's likely a reason it doesn't align with the objective or goal. The originator of the idea should attentively listen, inquire about the reasons behind the resistance, gaining a deeper understanding, and then work on addressing those concerns. By doing so, many of the drawbacks of the idea can be resolved, potentially transforming it into a winning proposition. However, if the resistance stems from issues unrelated to the primary objective, the best course of action may be to wait for a more opportune moment to reintroduce the idea.

Absolutely, assess and reassess the ideas you want to present to your boss; poke holes in your ideas, as certainly that is what your boss potentially may do. And 100% consider the risks, not only the safety risks, but the financials ones as well.

Work on why the reporting head is resistant and understand if resistance is only towards us or everyone. In the other hand, leave some slides or material, with in depth data, so you really dig in if it's the case. Preparation is the better investment you can do. “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail”

Bosses are tough. They don’t take everything the way you want it to be done. Most of times, you need to act flexible and try to feed in the information through multiple ways. Rejection may take any form. Sometimes its out right and sometimes its presented in the shape of company’s limitations; mostly financial. However, one must not give up efforts. It needs persistent convincing to make things work. Bosses need rational and logical reasons to understand proposals. A logical outcome with solutions to be presented to move the idea towards brainstorming. Feedback mechanism must be open and friendly. Also, timing is critical for discussion. An annoyed boss would never listen in the first place. Find a good time and place to share proposals.

Although some of the best leaders/supervisors are open to ideas and opinions of their subordinates, sometimes they have deferring approaches to solutions or differing information than the subordinate. In government administration, the patient approach is key. I have found that the presentation of a problem or a situation accompanied by a solution to the problem or situation is the best approach. In my military experience my approach is; your boss is the boss and your responsible for loyalty to that relationship. With that said, if they are still resistant, then the onus is on me to figure out what direction the supervisor is coming from. Try to meet them at where they are and respect the relationship to achieve our goals.

They think they are right, but resistance to their authority has never been an option. I always rethink how to mold someone's thinking onto the right track by changing the poles but remaining with the same plot. Yes, a resistant boss is sometimes very good for the refining process of your ideas and projects because there is always room for improvement. No matter what, you adopt it by hook or by crook.

Acknowledge and respect his ability to put ourselves in the place of someone else while recognizing his point of view, experience and beliefs, communicate clearly with some example like data, evidence, pass experience, technical issues that comply with safety and rules and listen carefully to his view, then build trust through competent and reliability.

Well the priority is to examine own idea, how valid and realistic is it, does it takes into consideration accurate data, how the data in possession transformed to an information, the benefits vs the cost, does it solve an existing or potential problem, what are the potential challenges and the counter challenges to the idea if any, if it’s rejected based on logic and feasibility ground, the feedback should be taken positively.
