What do you do if you need to apply logical reasoning to preserve historical buildings as an architect?

I take a somewhat simpler approach. I consider who built it and whether or not their legacy can be restored and repurposed. If the answer is “yes” I would proceed from there. Unless the historical building has some significant value it has to have a purpose in its retention.

A condition evaluation is critical. Foundation, bearing walls and roof conditions are key considerations. Retention of all or part of the building structure should be considered. If you can use the structure keep it. If another part cannot be integrated successfully demolition may be the only alternative. The goal should be to retain and use as much of the original structure as possible.

This issue can be problematic in some jurisdictions. It’s important to consult with the local community and the municipal authorities to determine what is acceptable and what is wanted from the site/building. There also has to be a level of practicality established. Buildings constructed 100+ year’s ago without vapour barriers & insulation do not take kindly to modern methodologies. The need is to strike a balance between what is wanted and what is practical.

Extremely important. Getting a buy-in from the community is essential for a successful project. Communication, clear, concise and honest is required and it should start early in the process. You do not want the community thinking they were a last minute consideration. However, a word of caution, it is best to bring “concepts” to the community for their consideration and input. Asking, “what do you want to do with the site?” will only create divisions and controversies and slow progress.

Caution must be exercised when integrating modern technology into older structures because older buildings were not constructed to readily accept today’s building systems. I often found the best approach was to retain as much of the original structure as possible as a “separate entity” and integrate a new structure into the design. The original structure can then be upgraded into the whole building while allowing for the deficiencies posed by the older structure.
