What is the best way to handle rejection as a freelance writer?

Rejection in freelancing is often multifaceted. It doesn't always signify a deficiency in your skills; rather, it might stem from various factors like misalignment of expectations, budget constraints, or external market dynamics. Rather than internalizing rejection, it's valuable to analyze the specific reasons and leverage them for personal and professional growth. Seeking feedback, researching target audiences, or adjusting rates can be constructive ways to navigate and improve future opportunities.

The key thing to do after a rejection is to think about what happened, and how you can learn from it. Make sure you understand the exact reason Why? Asking for and listening to feedback is the most valuable thing you can do when faced with a job rejection. Self-analysis alone won't paint the whole picture of why you weren't the right person for the role.

Something I advise any writers I work with is to try to get their heads around the idea that rejection is part of living a writer life. It just comes w the territory no matter how experienced or brilliant you are. If you can accept that, rejection still sux (and you’ll still need to lick your wounds) but doesn’t feel quite so personal or painful.

We're humans so rejection would hurt us, but a better approach should be finding out possible reasons why we were rejected, and drilling ourselves to become better. If we don't use this approach then we're getting ourselves ready to be consistently doing the wrong thing.

As a freelancer, you'll get a lot of "no" and a bit of "maybe later." Each no is a chance to perfect your messaging. You should refine your pitches or your letters of interest to better hit the points your potential client is looking for. Don't tell them what you can do. Show them what you can do for them.
