Right at this stage you have to be brutally honest. Mostly to save yourself and others a lot of time and pain. Ask the question is it substantial enough to make a full film script? Some books are great as books but they will not provide enough to fill out everything you need for a film. If you can't see the big picture at this stage, walk away.

It's not always possible to have luxury of choice on whether a comic should be animated film as well. Artists may not see a comic translating well to animated film but marketing strategy of a project may consider it extremely beneficial. And not all projects are so relaxed. If there is time, feel free to immerse yourself, live and breath the stories before taking a hot bath with the content and contemplate everything in and around the project. Sometimes it is easier to READ the characters emotions if you can literally READ words that describe how they are feeling. "Respect the essence, not the details" sounds clever but it's silly. The most important factor in adapting any work and definitely a comic book into a film (animated or otherwise) is "Respect the material." If you are dismissive of the "genre" as "just for kids or fans" or not true literature, bail. You're not going to get the pathos of the story and fail miserably as Ang Lee did with HULK. Every story, and comic books are stories, are a world unto themselves. If you're adapting that world into another form and don't respect the material, you're not being serious.

I agree with this as it involves bringing the comic to life . Through out the production pipeline communication is key as it helps to translate and transition the story from the storyboards to frames showing motion which becomes animation either 2D or 3D. It is very vital and necessary to involve the Original Author before and throughout the production process .

Maybe consider just not doing it. The entertainment/animation industry needs more original ideas, not more stealing and borrowing other ideas because they feel safe or easy. But if you are going to make an adaptation of a comic try to stay true to the source material and do it justice. This article has subjects titled "Adapt, don't copy" and "Respect the essence, not the details" which to me sounds like justifying making a bunch of creative changes. If you need to creatively alter the source material then take a step back and ask yourself "why not use a different or original idea".

I would request you to first watch "Saving Mr. Banks". It's a movie of Walt Disney adapting the book "Mary Poppins" into a movie. It deals with the actual issues of adaptations. To get the real essence and character of people in the story. To retain the emotion people carry about the comic/ book while portraying the character in a definitive medium like cinema.

With this project, you would know your limits of what you are capable of doing. See how you can translate a scene into a storyboard sequence first and run by several people for feedback.
