Junior engineers are struggling with aerospace challenges. How can you help them step up and conquer?

During 5 years apprenticeship in a design office the knowledge gained abot finding practical solutions, is priceless. The young engineer gets to stand on the shoulders of all those that went before. Unfortunately the decision makers resposible for training programmes, were not themselves part of that process. Do the current training programmes equip the young engineer with the skills required to support the ongoing needs of the industry?

Mentorship is always and forever the first point in anything. But it’s no sure way to know beforehand that a person is a right mentor or not. For upcoming Aerospace Engineers, I would advice take the benefit of LinkedIn as much as you can mail professors, and ALWAYS AND FOREVER KEEP CHECKING COMPANY OR LAB WEBSITES for any opening. Those give very practical knowledge and will make you confident. Especially research associate positions have the direct impact of working under a skilled and experienced mentor.

I've seen firsthand how crucial teamwork is in aerospace. You want to create an environment where everyone feels their voice matters. Getting junior engineers involved early on is key - their fresh perspectives can lead to breakthroughs. Collaboration isn't just about efficiency; it's the lifeblood of innovation. Learn learn learn. There are many openings now a days (paid unpaid). Keep updating your skill set and keep practicing them. Go through the lectures from different source books, stay in the process.

From my experience, simulation is a fundamental tool to know however it is huge because of the number of matters (mechanics, thermodynamics, electric, etc.). I would suggest focusing on one or two that are complementary to your basic skills. Also, try to combine testing and simulation, the results will be amazing.

In Aerospace simulation is a big skillset. It’s not possible to physically test every component of Aerospace industry (duh!!) so simulation softwares comes to rescue. Learn ANSYS a widely used and accepted simulation software. Or build your own source code and run in them. Learn OpenFOAM. It’s a huge world.

In my years overseeing aerospace projects, I've learned that equipping young engineers is like giving a chef a fully stocked kitchen. Being an aerospace engineer is the toughest job, because there is very less forgiveness for any errors. 1. Get your basics right! Have thorough understanding of basic engineering and science. 2. Have a good understanding of GD&T and aerospace basics. 3. Try to get more depth in your field and breadth in associated fields. This can be helpful while climbing up the career ladder. 4. Be aware of the rules and regulations of the Aviation Authority (FAA, EASA, etc.). 5. Always update and upgrade yourself with constant learning and training. No matter how senior you are, there will be always scope for improvement.
