In my experience Emotional intelligence (EI) significantly influences your ability to lead by enhancing interpersonal relationships, communication, and overall team dynamics. Emotional intelligence enhances leadership by fostering self-awareness, emotional control, empathy, strong social skills, and motivation. These qualities contribute to a positive and collaborative work environment, ultimately leading to more effective and respected leadership.

A program manager should not appeal to power or authority to lead a team, i.e., using the 'carrot or stick' analogy. Instead, they should appeal to a person's enlightened self-interests to ensure the best possible outcomes for the program. Thus, the program manager uses EI to influence and persuade team members rather than inspire and motivate (traditional pain/reward mechanism). "Like" if you concur.

Being an effective program manager involves taking care of your team, and a big part of this is leveraging EI. Leading with EI is not just a compassionate approach; it's also a wiser and ultimately more productive way to lead. EI enables you to guide your team with empathy and grace. This can help you identify and collaboratively work through any issues your team members may face, which in turn helps them overcome challenges and reach their full potential.

EQ or EI is one of the most important skills which is much needed in current evolving environment to influence leadership effectiveness. It enables to reform leadership skills such as Self Regulation, Awareness, Motivation and many other soft skills.

As program managers, our super-skill is influencing without authority. At the same time, lack of authority can frustrate us many times during a workday with 'if only I had the authority...' questions. When such a question hits us, we should try to pause and take a step back. This will help us realize that authority is not a magic pill that will solve all the problems. People are different and their work styles are different. Our frustration comes from this mismatch, not because of the other person's errors. Many times, we may also be causing such frustration in others for the same reason. This is where EI can play a huge role in seeing things from others' perspective and having a collaborative conversation which opens doors.
