How can you test candidate SEO skills?

The first step to test candidate SEO skills is to review their portfolio and resume. Look for examples of websites they have worked on, either as an in-house SEO specialist, a freelancer, or an agency consultant. Check the quality and relevance of the content, the keywords, the meta tags, the site speed, the mobile-friendliness, and the backlink profile of these websites. Also, look for quantifiable results and metrics, such as traffic, conversions, rankings, and revenue. If possible, verify these results with third-party tools or contact the website owners for references.

Review the candidate's portfolio and resume for evidence of past SEO projects and achievements. Look for specific examples of SEO strategies implemented, improvements in search engine rankings, and contributions to website traffic growth. A comprehensive portfolio demonstrates practical experience and proficiency in SEO tactics.
The second step to test candidate SEO skills is to ask them to perform a technical audit on a website of your choice. A technical audit is a comprehensive analysis of the technical aspects of a website that affect its performance and visibility on search engines. It covers areas such as crawling, indexing, site structure, URL structure, canonicalization, redirects, robots.txt, sitemaps, schema markup, security, and more. A good SEO candidate should be able to identify and prioritize the most critical issues and provide actionable recommendations on how to fix them.

To assess SEO skills, I ask a scenario: Imagine Digikala faces a ranking issue. When a user searches "buy iPhone," the iPhone 13 PDP ranks first, followed by the iPhone PLP. The crucial aspect isn't the proposed solution but comprehending user intent and the desired ranking for each page. In essence, you need to ask questions that reveal the candidate's mindset. While you can teach them their weaknesses later, if they lack a fundamental understanding of SEO and how it works, they'll always struggle, and their growth to a senior level will be limited.

Conduct a technical SEO audit of a sample website provided by the candidate or one relevant to your industry. Assess their ability to identify technical issues such as crawl errors, broken links, site speed optimization, and mobile-friendliness. A thorough technical audit reveals the candidate's understanding of fundamental SEO principles and their attention to detail.

For more advanced interviews, I always ask for a few key technical points: 1. How to handle orphaned landing pages. 2. JavaScript SEO guidance & best practice. 3. And how to conduct an audit successfully and present the information. Not only are accurate answers required, but someone must articulate them well. I always look for folks who can answer concisely and with confidence (and hopefully have a bit of fun with it!).

Technical Audit: Provide a website for analysis, assessing their ability to identify and address technical SEO issues like crawl errors, site speed, and mobile-friendliness. Look for attention to detail and prioritization of fixes based on impact.
The third step to test candidate SEO skills is to ask them to conduct a keyword research for a specific topic or niche. Keyword research is the process of finding and analyzing the words and phrases that users type into search engines when looking for information, products, or services related to your business. A good SEO candidate should be able to use various tools and methods to generate a list of relevant and profitable keywords, as well as evaluate their difficulty, competition, search volume, and intent.

I've read 1,000 articles on keyword research. So many clever technical checklists. But almost never does the SEO expert start with how that business makes money. Ranking on more keywords is great, but if you can't make the cash register ring, what's the point? Understand their customers so well you can answer their most common questions (PAA) with EEAT. If you don't know what PAA and EEAT are, Google what I've said on it.

A keyword research test for an SEO expert would involve identifying relevant keywords, analyzing search volume and competition, understanding user intent, and providing recommendations for keyword optimization in website content.
The fourth step to test candidate SEO skills is to ask them to optimize a piece of content for a target keyword. Content optimization is the process of improving the quality and relevance of the content on a web page to match the user intent and the search engine algorithms. A good SEO candidate should be able to write or edit the content in a way that incorporates the keyword naturally and strategically, as well as optimize other elements such as the title, the headings, the meta description, the images, the links, and the internal structure.

They should improve the quality and relevance of the content to match user intent and search engine algorithms. This involves naturally incorporating the keyword, and optimizing the title, headings, meta description, images, links, and internal structure. This step evaluates their ability to enhance content for better SEO performance.

Drawing upon a decade in SEO, I evaluate candidates by tasking them with content optimization challenges. I assess their ability to seamlessly integrate target keywords into content while maintaining natural flow and adhering to search engine algorithms. Beyond keyword placement, I scrutinize their capacity to enhance titles, headings, meta descriptions, images, links, and internal structure. This step not only gauges technical proficiency but also unveils their strategic approach to content creation, a hallmark of seasoned SEO professionals.
The fifth step to test candidate SEO skills is to ask them to devise a link building strategy for a website. Link building is the process of acquiring links from other websites that point to your website, which can boost your authority, reputation, and ranking on search engines. A good SEO candidate should be able to identify and pursue relevant and high-quality link opportunities, as well as avoid or remove harmful or spammy links. They should also be familiar with the best practices and guidelines for ethical and effective link building.

Link building stands as a pillar of effective SEO, making it a pivotal aspect to consider when assessing a candidate's proficiency in search engine optimization. A candidate's ability to execute a strategic and ethical link building campaign speaks volumes about their understanding of off-page SEO factors and their capacity to improve a website's authority and rankings. Effective link building goes beyond simply acquiring backlinks; it involves devising a holistic strategy that prioritizes quality over quantity. A competent SEO candidate should demonstrate a nuanced understanding of various link acquisition techniques, including outreach, guest blogging, content syndication, and relationship building.

When I was evaluating candidates' link-building skills, I asked them to outline a strategy for acquiring high-quality backlinks for a specific website. This allowed me to assess their creativity and understanding of ethical link-building practices. One time I was reviewing a candidate's link-building expertise, I presented them with a scenario of a website with a manual penalty due to unnatural links. I asked them to propose a plan for link removal and recovery, revealing their problem-solving abilities. In my experience, candidates who could share success stories of their link-building efforts, along with the tactics used and the impact on search rankings, demonstrated a track record of effective link-building.

Assess the candidate's link building skills by evaluating their knowledge of link acquisition strategies, outreach techniques, and link quality assessment criteria. Ask them to outline their approach to link building, including identifying link opportunities, conducting outreach campaigns, and evaluating the authority and relevance of potential link sources. Look for evidence of their ability to build high-quality, natural backlinks that contribute to improved search engine rankings and website authority.
The sixth and final step to test candidate SEO skills is to ask them about the latest SEO trends and updates. SEO is a dynamic and evolving field that requires constant learning and adaptation to the changes in the user behavior and the search engine algorithms. A good SEO candidate should be aware of the current and emerging SEO trends and updates, such as voice search, artificial intelligence, mobile-first indexing, core web vitals, and more. They should also be able to explain how these trends and updates affect their SEO strategy and tactics.

One of my favorite ways to test SEO candidates is learn more about their thought process. I'm less concerned about them reading all of the updates and news websites about SEO. I'm far more concerned about their "thesis" on where SEO is headed. What does the future of SEO look like? Why? How have and how will algorithm changes impact their approach? And what data from recent trends do they have to make their case?

Rather than put the candidate on the spot by asking them to name the last update (there are so many!), I mention one of them and ask for their opinion on how it might affect a website such as ours. I avoid Yes/No questions where possible, but I do ask them to describe where they get their SEO news.

My method for assessing a candidate involves an assignment that takes 30-40 minutes. This assignment is based on the analysis of data from the Search Console or Google Analytics (GA). Candidates are required to present a hypothesis based on this data. The questions related to the Search Console are sufficient to evaluate the candidate's SEO skills effectively.

There's no standardisation of SEO training locally or globally so the range of talent is far and wide. I find Great SEOs have a "sense" or "feel" for what issues are important or not important based on their experiences and conclusions they've come to themselves, rather than reading it on a blog.

A proficient SEO candidate should demonstrate the ability to utilize diverse tools and techniques to compile a comprehensive list of pertinent and lucrative keywords. They should also be capable of assessing factors such as keyword difficulty, competition level, search volume, and user intent to determine the most effective keywords for optimizing search engine performance. This exercise helps gauge the candidate's proficiency in keyword research, an essential aspect of SEO strategy that influences website visibility and ranking in search results.
