To demonstrate that you are the right fit for a digital learning job, you should emphasize your skills, experiences, and attributes that align with the specific requirements of the position. Here are some tips to showcase your suitability for a digital learning role: Highlight relevant skills, emphasize technical skills, demonstrate digital literacy, showcase educational background, present practical experience, provide examples of past projects, quantify results, demonstrate adaptability, illustrate collaboration and communication skills, express a passion for learning and development, create a digital portfolio, tailor your resume and cover letter, and prepare for interviews.

The best way to know you are a right fit for a digital learning job is by looking at the job description and requirements. It is very important to take note of the requirements to be sure you are qualified before applying.

See if it’s a good fit. Most important. Can you work for the manager? Does the job allow for creativity, if that’s of interest to you? Is the IT infrastructure adequate?

Showcasing relevant skills, experiences, and qualities is essential. Here are some strategies to help you prove your suitability for the position: Highlight relevant degrees, certifications, or training in education, instructional design, e-learning, or related fields. Showcase your proficiency with digital learning platforms, authoring tools, and other relevant technologies. Create a portfolio that showcases your previous digital learning projects. Include examples of instructional materials, online courses, multimedia content, and other relevant work. Customizing your resume, cover letter, and interview responses to highlight these aspects will help you stand out as the ideal candidate for a digital learning job.

This is the first step, yet many miss it. Please don't just jump at applying for any Digital Role without knowing the specifications. Many recruiters do not know the difference between IT managers and Digital Staff. Why? Digital learning is a new wave ( not more than 5 years ago, no one spoke to it). You want to ensure that your skills match and even supersede the company's requirements. Reflect on these skills in your CV and make sure they are prioritized above other skills in your CV.

Be very clear about the tool box you will have if you take the job. My favorite part of being a learning designer is using Articulate Storyline to create complex, interactive eLearning that's engaging and meets learning needs. Once when I started a job, I realized too late that my new organization didn't have any eLearning development tools or an LMS. They primarily produced learning videos and expected me to work in Adobe Premiere Pro. I have since learned to ask very specific questions in the interview to clarify what resources will be available day one for me to do my job.

I can’t adequately emphasize the importance of a portfolio when demonstrating digital skills. Certainly, certifications can demonstrate theoretical understanding; but, you’ll be chosen based upon what you can do. Depth in a common tool is helpful tool (whether in eLearning or video creation); but, tools are workplace dependent. It may be an Adobe shop or Articulate or Camtasia. Alternatively, layout and design skills are independent of the technology. Demonstrate your ability to create valid learning experiences that look professional. Then, show that you can apply those skills across platforms. That will position you well for multiple roles.

If the job isn’t a good fit, then don’t bother moving onto additional steps Ask what tools the organization uses, and if you really want the job, hone your skills on the tools you’re not great at Absolutely have a non-proprietary portfolio available; develop a course specific to the organization.

Highlight your own dedication to learning and staying on top of trends. Discuss any certifications or professional development courses you've completed in the field of instructional design, demonstrating your commitment to continuous learning and skill enhancement. As an example, my favourite question to ask during interviews is: "How do you stay informed about emerging trends in instructional design, and can you share an example of a recent learning experience or professional development opportunity you pursued to enhance your skills?" During interviews, be prepared to discuss specific challenges you've faced in previous projects and how you overcame them, showcasing your problem-solving skills and adaptability.

I find the word “passion” demeaning. I prefer “professionalism”. Many people say they are professional elearning developers, but they aren’t really. Show your commitment to knowing and the craft and your ongoing education to expand you skills and stay current with best practices

Life is learning, and learning is life, not always fair, but always learning! More is sharing what you have, but others may not, but do not let that stop you from being you!

Continuously updating my skills and learning new things is a passion of mine. It's why I am always seeking new things to study. When applying for an instructional designer role, emphasize your strong communication skills by showcasing past projects where you collaborated effectively with diverse teams. Highlight adaptability by sharing instances where you successfully adjusted strategies based on feedback or changing project requirements. Additionally, underscore your understanding of learners by describing how you tailor instructional materials to diverse audience needs. Companies value a positive attitude, so express enthusiasm for continuous learning and your commitment to contributing positively to team dynamics.

Showcasing that you're a pleasant person to work with so often goes overlooked in terms of preparing for digital learning interviews! While a fair amount of the job does include more "hard skills" like critical thinking, analysis, and the application of learning principles, another major component is collaborating with SMEs, project management, and stakeholder communication.

I will continually tell mentees, "never underestimate the power of your soft skills". Hard skills can get you into a system but they will not be all that keep you. It is important you know how to communicate and be creative and even collaborate effectively with members in your team ( it really does not matter if you work remotely or in person). Work on constantly improving your soft skills, especially in the digital learning space. If you are a script writer, it will tell in your scripts. Same as an instructional designer or the likes.

Make sure your portfolio goes beyond the end products like quick reference guides and eLeaning links. In a short text block, share the business needs, the design strategies, obstacles you overcame, and how you worked with other people to achieve the goal. Come into an interview ready to share stories about the process instead of focusing solely on the learning solutions you've developed.

Hey! Pace yourself. Do not jump into giving answers without thinking them true. You are trying to ensure your answers are convincing and assertive, yet honest. Think through all your skills set and navigate responses to scenarios you know you can solve.

I think when answering questions honesty is vital. Using the STAR method, obviously you want to show successful outcomes. But I believe that it's just as important to show how you learn from not so successful outcomes. Let's face it, everyone makes mistakes. It's how you recover from them, and what you take away from them that counts.

Do something different. Everyone who is legitimately qualified for the job will have a sample course demonstrating their instructional design skills. So, yes you need to have that, but you also need to go far beyond that. Find out what exactly the role will entail. Is it building learning, delivering learning, training others to deliver, training others to create. Provide multiple media samples of video, screen recordings, documents, and projects----whatever evidence you can provide that doesn't just describe , but shows and demonstrates your approach to digital learning. But, make sure that the emphasis on anything you do is student learning, not the technology.
