Before you start writing, you need to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve with your copy. What is the main goal of your piece? Who are you writing for? What problem are you solving or what benefit are you offering? How do you want your readers to feel and what do you want them to do after reading your copy? Having a clear purpose will help you focus your copy and avoid irrelevant or confusing information.

One thing I've found useful is to work backward - figure out the main point of the piece and then create your content to get there. Use stories to illustrate the point. Determine who your audience is (a reader who's looking for a budget vacation is vastly different from one who's looking for the right financial advisor). Take them on a journey, and end that journey with a call to action for your services.

1. Before you put pen to paper, ask "What do I want to say?" 2. Then bring in the researched facts and figures and see how best you can convey them. Can you add a case study example or a story? 3. Assemble the copy in a carefully curated order. - Start with a cliff hanger or a question or a common problem statement. - Add facts in. - Testimonials next. - Why they should act now. - What do they have to lose? - Summarize and a CTA 4. Spend time creating a headline that users can't scroll through 5. In the end, ask yourself - "Have I said what I wanted to say?"
The 4 Cs are a handy checklist to evaluate your copy. They stand for clear, concise, compelling, and credible. Your copy should be clear enough to convey your message without ambiguity or jargon. It should be concise enough to avoid unnecessary words or repetition. It should be compelling enough to capture your reader's attention and interest. And it should be credible enough to establish your authority and trustworthiness. Use the 4 Cs to review your copy and make sure it meets these criteria.
One of the best ways to perfect your copy is to get feedback from others. You can ask a colleague, a friend, a mentor, or a professional editor to review your copy and give you honest and constructive criticism. Feedback can help you spot errors, gaps, inconsistencies, or weaknesses in your copy that you might have missed. It can also help you gain a fresh perspective and new insights on how to improve your copy. Be open to feedback and use it to refine your copy.

Get feedback from peers & mentors. For up to 4 years in my career- I used to get my copy and content checked through my peers and that helped me write better each time. While starting out- - It is better a mentor or a senior reviews and edits your copy. Brutal edits make you the best writer.

1. If you are freelancing, create a networking peer group. Share your copy to gain and offer feedback. 2. There are many freelancing groups you can jump into and ask for feedback. 3. Or just throw it on the internet. See how your customers respond. Refine and test again. Customer feedback is more powerful than any expert's feedback.
Another way to perfect your copy is to test it with your target audience. You can use various methods, such as surveys, polls, A/B testing, or analytics, to measure how your copy performs and how your audience responds to it. Testing can help you validate your assumptions, identify what works and what doesn't, and optimize your copy for better results. Testing can also help you learn more about your audience's preferences, needs, and behaviors, and tailor your copy accordingly.

You've got to keep an open mind when reaching for or receiving feedback. Be willing to learn and learn not just by reading other copywriters' works or YouTube videos, but by practicing...a lot. Also, don't limit yourself, and be intentional about putting your work out there for substantial feedback. That way you see what works and what doesn't.
The final step to perfect your copy is to edit and proofread it thoroughly. Editing is the process of improving the structure, flow, tone, and style of your copy. Proofreading is the process of checking for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting errors. Editing and proofreading can make a big difference in the quality and effectiveness of your copy. They can also enhance your credibility and professionalism. Use tools, such as Grammarly, Hemingway, or ProWritingAid, to help you with editing and proofreading.

I find Grammarly pretty unhelpful, especially when writing technical or legal documents, also it has flagged things before that I know are correct. When proofreading, I read things out loud (or 'out loud' in my head) to check the flow and see if anything clangs, and rewrite accordingly.
The last tip to perfect your copy is to keep learning and practicing. Copywriting is a skill that can always be improved and updated. You can learn from other successful copywriters, from books, courses, blogs, podcasts, or newsletters, from your own experience and experiments, and from your audience's feedback and behavior. Keep learning and applying new techniques, tips, tricks, and trends to your copy. Keep practicing and challenging yourself to write better copy every time.

I look at copy, all the time. Whether it's on a shampoo bottle or a YouTube video or a billboard, I think about what I like and don't like about it, and what I would have done if it were my job.
