The mastery of the target culture is paramount to keep the style and make the target text read natural. In effect, unlike what many people think, translation is more than words replacement. It goes far beyond this. This is why the translator should have a very good mastery of the target culture. This will help them convey what is said in the source text in a more natural way. E.g. He kick the bucket (EN) Il est passé de vie à trépas (FR) And of course translation will always be led by it's context.

A useful strategy I implement in complex projects is to have a notes file where I keep details that I may need to refer to during the translation work. It is more than a glossary, though it includes words or phrases. I may add specific facts, websites, images or notes to self.
