How can you effectively prepare candidates for remote interviews?

It’s very important to communicate the expectations before hand so that both the recruiter and the interviewee are in tandem with each other to avoid any confusion later on.

When conducting remote interviews, it's crucial to proactively communicate expectations to candidates. Before the interview, ensure candidates are well-informed about the remote format and well-versed in the procedure. Provide detailed instructions on practical interviews, and offer guidance on troubleshooting in case of technical issues. Encourage candidates to prepare questions and conduct thorough research on the company and the role, mirroring the level of preparation expected for an in-person interview. This proactive communication helps create a smooth and transparent interview process, contributing to a positive candidate experience in a remote setting.

The most practical and critical advice I have for a remote interview is - test the tech. Try the connecting links before the interview, test your speakers, check your webcam angle, make sure your wifi is working etc. These all sound basic but it can make or break your interview, or make you very flustered prior to the interview, so don't leave it to chance.

- Walk them through the history of the team and company growth, funding etc. - Take them through comp details - Ask them to write statement to share with the team before the call to save them time explaining their reasons for leaving and joining companies - Prepare them on challenges in the role and how to best address them - Take them through the backgrounds of current and former employees did they can measure their skill set and experience accordingly - Coach them on the style and topics each person will focus on and their expectations

We can advise candidates to choose a quiet, well-lit, and clutter-free space for the interview. This ensures minimal distractions and allows for focused communication. We can remind candidates to dress professionally and in alignment with the role and company culture. If the platform allows, candidates can use a virtual background to maintain professionalism. Encourage candidates to conduct a pre-interview technical check. This includes verifying their camera angle, ensuring clear audio quality, and testing their internet connection to prevent disruptions.

Seen should be setup properly first of all prepare surroundings and tell in your family that please be silent or make less noise . Then take a glass of water and other stuff.

I like to remind candidates that the environment they are interviewing from, will be perceived as their home office. It's important to show you have a quiet, calm, and decluttered space. Somewhere where you will be free from distractions and can work efficiently. Furthermore, you will not always be expected to be suited and booted when working from home, however, it shows you want to impress and put your best foot forward by dressing formally for your interview. Finally, always log in early to ensure your technology/internet and interview link works. It's a good idea too to check your camera angle is flattering and does not include anything you don’t want to be captured.

It is recommended to familiarize candidates with the video conferencing platform that will be used for the interview. Encourage them to explore its features and functionalities. Provide them with resources or tutorials to help them navigate the platform, adjust settings, and troubleshoot any common issues.

Got the logistics sorted? Now it's time to prepare the scene. Finding the perfect spot for a remote interview isn't always easy. If there's a chance of interruptions, like a colleague or family member walking in, give the interviewer a heads-up at the beginning. It's all about managing expectations. Also, make sure your internet connection is solid. And don't forget to check that your audio and video are working fine. Taking care of these things helps keep your interview smooth and professional.

We can advise candidates to look directly at the camera, not the screen, to simulate eye contact and convey engagement and interest, as well as the significance of using positive body language, gestures, and facial expressions to express enthusiasm and confidence, creating a favorable impression. Candidates should demonstrate attentiveness, respond thoughtfully to questions, and seek clarification when needed, which reduces misunderstanding.

Let's talk tips – the good kind, not spoilers! 1) Enthusiasm. Can't stress this enough. (I've seen too many skilled candidates miss out on offers not due to lack of skills, but a lack of enthusiasm. ) 2) Active listening and no guessing. I encourage candidates to really listen and not jump to conclusions. If something's not clear, ask away. It's actually cool because it shows the interviewer how they think. 3) Meaningful questions. And I don't mean the basic "What are the office hours?" type questions. I guide them to ask things that dig deeper, like "Considering our talk today and what you've seen on my CV, any concerns about my ability to succeed in this role?"

I find that it is extremely important to have 2 or 3 stories/projects ready to use at any given point when answering questions. I prefer going over the STAR method of answering interview questions and notice that candidates often do better in interviews if they've already prepared experiences from previous projects. For example: 1. A project where you failed and learned from it. 2. A project where you worked with a coworker you didn't necessarily like. 3. Projects you felt went perfect. Coming into interviews with these types of things in mind make it really easy to answer questions with fluidity.

Some important aspects to note during interview. - Have pleasant smile and try to have eye contacts with your interviewer most time. - In case you are attempting to case study or presenting some projects, inform interviewer and take permission to view monitor screen if you have and you need it to. This will avoid reading one as rude if you are also looking at side screen and at camera simultaneously. - Make you story succinct and in 2-3 points to clearly tell interviewer what you want to convey. This will help to grab attention of interviewer. One study has proved that after 15 minute its usual that people starts loosing attentions if you are not to the point and clear in your thoughts.

The best way to provide feedback before your candidate's remote interview is to ALWAYS have a video chat with them yourself. This way you can assess their on-screen technique and offer your feedback based on them, personally. Good and constructive! If the candidate does something great, build their confidence and confirm that they are great at this and that you would not suggest changing their style. For anything that could be improved, be honest, and offer your guidance and tips. Kindly suggest, they use more hand gestures, answer more concisely, etc. And when they are unsure suggest, they pause, take a drink of water, and ask the interviewer to repeat the question, giving you time to realign or re-evaluate your response.

Give feedback and ask for feedback. Always give feedback to your candidates. Let them know how they did –it’s helpful for them to understand their performance and where they can improve. But don’t stop there. Also, ask them for their feedback. Find out what they thought about the interview process. This gives you some great insights into how your interview methods are perceived and what can be improved. It’s all about keeping things open and always looking to get better, both for your candidates and your own process.

Remind candidates of the importance of non-verbal communication during a remote interview. Encourage them to maintain good posture, make eye contact with the camera, and use hand gestures sparingly. Remind them to speak clearly and at an appropriate volume. Remote interviews may encounter technical glitches or interruptions. Encourage candidates to have a backup plan in case of connectivity issues, such as keeping a phone nearby as an alternative communication method. Advise them to remain calm and composed if any technical difficulties arise during the interview.

I will often do mock interviews with my candidates, especially if they are interviewing in a second or third+ language! If I have any other information on what companies are specifically looking for when it comes to their roles, I'll also give them some pointers on other credentials they could pursue in the meantime.

If I will answer this from the recruiter side, I would say that building rapport doesn't start from the HR interview. It starts with the first communication between me and the candidate from the beginning whether it was through phone or emails when I do my screening or when I arrange the interview. A major key is to make the candidate feel comfortable by being friendly and breaking the ice at the beginning of the conversation, and show them that you want what's best for them.

Always be personable! Talk about your weekend, your favorite sports team, your family, etc. Whatever you are passionate about. Ask your interviewer questions like such and find a common ground without being too intrusive. It's not only important you can do the job, it's important you can vibe and work together. People hire people. Show some of yourself - you're not just a skill!

Let candidates know that interviews are a two way street. It is their right to also interview the company they have applied to, to assess suitability for themselves.

This is the best part of interview where interviewer can talk aside from interview, about other activities like volunteering, outreach company is engaged into. Also what candidates has interest outside work in sports, travel etc.. this will make him/her comfortable and they will start sharing more freely and that's the place you can find more about his soft skills, his thoughts on facing situation etc.

As a Talent Acquisition professional, something I have found helpful is to prepare brochures for my candidates with: - a summary of the job description - why to work with us - salary information - key points to prepare for our call - some URLs with tips and advice to polish their communication skills and understand the different kinds of interviews with the hiring managers and recruiting team - description of the hiring process We want candidates who succeed in the interview process. We want them to feel engaged and comfortable. We want to learn from them, not judge them. Interviewing for a job should not feel like a blind date. The better prepared they are, the better conversations they will have with their potential team.

There are several other things you need to prepare like body language, eye contact etc.

Here are some rules I always follow: 1) Transparency right from the start: No surprises for the candidates. I make sure to be clear about everything from the very beginning. 2) Preparation and Check-Ins: I always prepare the candidates for what's next and check in before each stage to see if they have any questions or concerns. 3) Consistent Communication: I always keep candidates in the loop by providing timely feedback after each stage and regular updates throughout the process. 4) Value and Personalization: I aim to offer value with a personalized touch whenever I can.

In my point of view, at the beginning of our career we all started as fresh, and we all needed someone at somepoint to give us a hand and help us mastering an interview. This is something that unfortunately is not teached at university. Its something that someone may learn from experience. Since I was a school student, I had the curiosity about the HR field and I used to read different materials about the recruitment in specific which have helped me at the beginning of my career to know how to handle interviews. Now, in my position I feel I have a responsibility toward the candidates to help them improve themselves, because alot of candidates might have potentials that they dont know how to show in the interviews.
